My phone won't accept my new Gmail password... what should I do?

I changed my Gmail password yesterday because my account was compromised.  Naturally, after changing the password online, I attempted to access my Gmail account from my phone with the updated password.  However, whenever I type the password in, my phone continually prompts me to reenter my password because the one I entered was invalid/incorrect.  I know I'm typing in the correct password, but I am not able to gain access to my account.  Any suggestions on what I should do?

do you have two step verification? I would check to see if they changed that, if not maybe a reset of the phone
