i just purchased the Thunderbolt last night. i wasn't told to charge the phone fully before using it, so i used it right away, and charged it fully overnight. i had the phone off the charger while at work beginning at 9am and with MINIMAL usage (maybe 5 text messages, and no webbrowsing or streaming of any kind) and the phone was completely dead by 4pm. I am wondering if this is typical of the phone or if i could have harmed the phone by not charging it fully before using it initially, if i got a defective battery, or if there are apps or anything else i need to turn off in order to conserve battery. any help would be appreciated... thanks! ![]()

I've never actually charge a phone fully before playing with it and haven't noticed any bad side effects. One thing to try is to drain it all the way down until it shuts off, then charge the phone until you get a green led, power the phone off and let it charge until you get a green led again which should take 30min to 1hr. Then power on the phone and let it charge until you get the green led (~15-30min). After following that method, I went ~10.5hrs and still had 83% left on light usage with almost half of that being used by a 30min call.

the biggest thing i noticed is that if you go to manage apps and click on running apps everything you ever opened is there, even some stuff you never used. I have to do a forcestop on every app right now..
Hopefully a software update will help, and whenever the 2.3 comes it will help as well.. the next few weeks you might to make sure you have a car charger ![]()

There's a great website for info on batteries called "Battery University".
Here's a link to info about Litium-Ion batteries.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
I would never completely discharge a Lithum Ion battery. It's very difficult to get it to start taking a charge once it's completely dead. It's not like a metal hydride battery.
Check out the link above. Probably has more info than you ever want or need to know, but the info is there.
Good Luck,

The phone is going to cut off prior to it reaching a low enough level that would hurt the battery. The main reason to completely discharge and then recharge is to get the battery gauge properly calibrated. Aside from calibrating the battery, complete discharges should be avoided as it's hard on the battery. Granted a good number of people aren't going to keep these devices long enough to notice any negative consequences from continuous full discharges.

Yup, you are correct PJ....
I bought 2 extended batteries for my Droid X and swap them periodically. I use my X heavily so it's an unusual day that I don't have to charge at least a little. This fact worries me some as when I get a 4G phone, I've got the feeling the 4G radio uses more "juice" than the 3G one. Maybe there will be a battery breakthru before my next phone in 2012.

Yeah everything is turned off. Talking about wifi and Bluetooth. You pretty much gotta turn off wifi, data sync, Bluetooth and 3g/4g services to just hold a charge all day. I started doing that 2day and I took it off charger with a full charge around 945am est and its now 700 and I have 64% battery left. Thats a little ridiculous

you must have an app(s) running constantly in the background. I'm having no issues going all day with light to moderate usage on wifi or 3G (not in an LTE area). Go into About Phone-Battery-Battery Use and see what it says. If it lists Display at the top, select it and check the Time On. If Cell standby is near the top, check to see how much Time Without Signal is listed.

ok as I saw it now works but all that runs on my battery is Display, Cell standy, Voice Call, Phone idle, Android System, com.htc.launcher, com.andriod.mms, and antivirus thats all that it says. So if you can help me set my phone up to use wifi or 3g/4g so i can use that and hopefully it lasts all day.

The display is generally going to be the biggest draw. If you have auto-brightness turned on, go into Settings-Display-Brightness and turn it off. Try setting it the the minimum possible level that you can live with. If you're outside a lot, there probably isn't much improvement that you're going to get from the display. There are 3 native widgets that you can use to quickly adjust screen brightness which can be put on your home screen. In the Widget list, one is called Power Control (has wifi, bluetooth, gps, sync and brightness) in the main list and the other 2 are under Settings if you scroll down in the widget list. One is called Power Dashboard which is similar to the Power Control Widget but a little flashier and the other is Brightness which is just a little 1x1 toggle.
Whenever possible try to connect to wifi as it's more efficient than 3G or 4G. Just remember to turn wifi off if you're going to be out of range for an extended period of time so it isn't needlessly scanning. For those without wifi access and in an LTE area, it's been suggested to disable LTE unless you need it. There isn't a 4G toggle yet but there are two other methods that can be used. One is dialing *#*#4636#*#* which will take you to a test menu. Select Phone Information, scroll down until you see a drop down with CDMA+LTE/EVDO and change that to CDMA Auto (PRL). Just keep hitting the back soft key until you get back to your home screen. If you think you'll forget that number, the same menu can be accessed via an app called phone info in the market. Then you can just add a shortcut to your homescreen and have immediate access to it. One nifty thing that Google recently rolled out is the online market. Once you log into your gmail account at the link I posted, you can hit install and it'll push it to your phone. No need to actually search the market.
If you text a lot, disabling "Vibrate when typing" under Settings-Language & Keyboard-Touch Input-Text Input can help.
Antivirus is just needless bloatware imo. Read reviews and don't needlessly download apps. It you install applications from other sources besides the Android Market, make sure they're legit.
If you have apps or widgets syncing, try adjusting the interval. Does that facebook widget really need to update every 30min or an hour? Same for weather. Android is all about widgets but decreasing the number of active widgets can also help.

How do you even get that much time? Thats almost 8 hours from 9:45 am to 7 pm. I am lucky if i get 4 hours and I have adjusted all of my settings for the least amount of battery use!

Yeah I was on the phone with Verizon and was told to download the Advanced task killer app and also turn off the WiFi and Bluetooth switches. When I Hung up I realized WiFi and Bluetooth were already turned off but I downloaded the app so I'll see how that goes... Really hoping it can at least make it thru a day!
Most people find that the Advanced Task Killer uses more battery than it saves, YMMV. Manually killing tasks in running services may be your best bet.

If you are using Advanced Task Killer and it is using too much of your battery...simply "kill" it as well, after you kill your other applications!
