according to these after 5 tries you can unlock with your Google credentials. It doesn't erase the phone.

I'm sorry to hear you have locked the device, and now the password is lost. I know it's important to gain access to the phone again.
Once the phone is locked, and you don't recall the Gmail password, and the device does not accept it; you will have to perform a factory reset. This is correct, it will delete everything you have on the phone.
