I installed a linksys USB adapter on my desktop, and dowloaded the software. It seems to be working, since I can connect to a neighbor's network. I can also connect to her network with my laptop. The problem is, I can't connect to my deasktop with my laptop. I have searched for a solution, but had no luck.
In Network Connections, on my desktop, I have:
Verizon broadband connection thru WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
and ---Local Area Connection with limited or no connectivity thru the ethernet card. (if I disable this, I lose the Verizon connection)
and ---1394 Connection connected thru 1394 Net Adapter
and----Wireless Network Connection connected thru USB adapter
Can anybody help?
Thank, Rich

After many hours trying everything suggested, I gave up and installed a router. Ran the installation CD, and everything works as it should.
Thanks much, Rich

#1 What is the brand and model of your modem?
#2 What is the brand and model of your router?
#3 What is the OS and Version of the Desktop and of the Laptop?
For example. Both are Windows XP.

The modem is Westell 2200
Instead of a router I have a Linksys WUSB11 adapter (ad hoc network)
XP Home on both computers

#1 The Westell 2200 is a modem combeo (modem and router-all-in-one), and it is in router modem - unless an user behind it put it into bridge mode.
I point to
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/9265
To detect if the Westell 2200 is in bridge mode, do the following..
#1 Go to Start -> Run.
#2 Type in cmd and press enter.
#3 In the new window, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
#4 With your web browser with the comptuter that you can get online with, go to a web site that displays the public IP that you are coming from.
Such as http://www.whatsmyip.org/
#5 If any of the IP Address on your computer match (are the same), then the modem is in bridge mode.

If the Westell 2200 is in router mode: You could get a Wireles Access point, follow the directions on connecting it to the router, and get your computers on by wireless. Depending on which one you buy, it may also have at least two LAN ports.
---
Not buying any wireless access point?
#1 You could use ICS http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
#2 Or the computer with two NICs, could use bridge mode on the XP computer.

Well, I have tried everything suggested, and still no joy! I set up an ad hoc network on the desktop, reinstalled XP on laptop, and installed wireless adapter driver. With the laptop I can connect to neighbor's network and get to internet. When I connect to ad hoc on my desktop, I can't get to internet. All icons look normal, it says I'm connected, great signal, but no internet.
Any other ideas?

Ok, let us do this even slower...
Are you even NATTED (or is the modem in bridge mode)?
This was addressed in my post above, when talkling about checking the IP Address on your computer and comparing it to the IP Address on a website that shows the public IP.

The Westell modem is in bridge mode. I do not understand what "NATTED" means.

Ok, that is sort of what I thought.
Now on the computer that is connected to the net, follow
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
--
Hint/Clue: On your computer, step number 5 for the ICS computer is the Verizon broadband connection thru WAN Miniport (PPPOE).
