What do i need to change or fix on the verizon "http://192.168.1.1/htmlV/welcomeMain.htm" page
that is affecting my outgoing mail?
The older westell 6100 modem--I can send email, but not this newer 7500.

I set the firewall to "low" in the 192.168.1.1 set up/config,
and lo and behold: I can now send email.
Now my question would be, now that this is on "low," I'm guess my mcAfee firewell set to normal will be adequate to do
what a firewall is supposed to do.

Not sure what the various "Firewall" level definitions are -- I'm sure dlsr or someone will chime in. Basically, you want the one which allow "anything out" but blocks "anything coming in" (a one way door so to speak).
On my FiOS router ... it's the "Medium" setting (Inbound Policy: Reject, Outbound Policy: Accept).
You don't want Aceept / Accept as that essentially disables the firewall on the router -- bad news.

I agree.
#1 For testing reasons, change that to medium in the router.
#2 Please report back the results.

You should simply call up Verizon and tell them that you would like to swap your equipment for a Wireless Gateway.
The model I have is here: http://www.actiontec.com/products/product.php?pid=189

The settings were on Medium (for firewall) before and caused the issue. Just to test this, I did as you suggested and put it back on medium, and same results: cannot send email, but can receive.
So I put the router firewall setting back on "low" and my McAfee firewall on full, and things work---are as normal. Are there any other setting on the PC (windows xp) itself that I should check or set to something?

Ok.
#1 In the modem combo, select Medium.
#2 Next to custom, for custon rules, select edit.
#3 Show a screen shot of that.
#4 Select Low.
#5 Next to custom, for custon rules, select edit.
#6 Show a screen shot of that.
#7 See as need be http://take-a-screenshot.org/
#8 Are you using port 25 or some other port to send ( for example port 587 as noted at http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/General+Support/Top+Questions/QuestionsOne/124274... ) e-mail?

#2 Next to custom, for custon rules, select edit.
A window opens that says:
"There are no rules to edit in "Medium Security"
Switch to a different firewall level before using the "Edit" function."
I switch and still get the same message.
I use port 465 to send mail.

I will have to look in my modem combo, and see if the same thing happens.
#2 Check the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers on your computer.
This means for example if you are on Windows XP...
a) Go to Start -> Run.
b) Type in cmd and press enter.
c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
#3 If the Default Gateway on your computer is not the same LAN IP Address of your modem combo, then:
a) you might have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected between your modem combo and your computer.
b) Despite it's title, follow this FAQ.

Thanks.
And just so I was clear, I no longer am using the westell 6100, now that the westell 7500 is working and enabling me to use the net.
