Can I use a Linksys router?

Can I (or should I) switch from an ancient Westell wireless modem with a broken antenna to a Linksys WRT54G router? I was given one, but don't know if I can use it or not. I've had the Westell modem since 2004.

I have a Macbook if that makes a difference.

The speeds at certain times of the day are horrible, but I don't know if a new router will matter or not. I'd certainly hope that it would help with being able to take the laptop outside and stay on my secured network.

Thanks in advance,

I use the same router in my home network so it should work fine.
