Internet Speed Test

I tried the speed test yesterday and it hung up on the download test. I called tech support yesterday about this . They tried the speed test and it didn't work for them either. Is anybody else having a problem? I tried it again today - same problem.

The speed test is a Java based program. Please go to http://www.java.com/en/ to verify that you have the latest version of Java.

Way lame.  If the version isn't sufficient, warn the user.  Why you need the latest biggest Java to run a simple ping test is beyond me.  What's the minimum version of Java required?

BTW I ran the speedtest.verizon.net app too and it hung at 'Checking Connection', i.e. the first step.  I'm running XP SP3, java ver 6, update 7.

I don't have an extra 100MB for updating Java, so I can run the speedtest app.

Wow I'm not sure where you are looking, but Java has always been free. Latest version is 6 , latest update is 27. Please go directly to this download site to get it for free

There are lots of speed test sites out there....

The two I use are http://www.speedtest.net and the one the FCC sponsors to get an idea of what the providers are doing;

http://www.broadband.gov/qualitytest/about/

Speedtest.net locates the fastest ping from your location and goes with it or you can test your connection worldwide!

The government one is a pain as one has to enter an address, but worth it as it builds a database for the FCC.

As to Verizon's speed test, it works most of the time for me, the times it didn't work I was having other Verizon problems.

Yes, java is required to use them as well as every other speed test I had ever tried.

Check those two out!

Cordially,

Gerard

Why is it that when I use Verizon's speedtest, which says it is routed through Reston VA that It shows 50+/50+,  but when I use an independent speed testing service, such as speakeasy,  it only shows 3.9/15.7?  Verizon's test shows I am transferring data 10 times faster than the estimates of otehr services.
