After I sent an email to Verizon support, a service agent called me (yes, called me!) and told me the same thing that CharlesH mentioned - that this is a known problem with this D-Link router that was installed several years ago. They are sending me a new one. Yipee!!!

My faith in Verizon has been restored. When I called the support number initially, the agent told me that everything I had (a router behind the Verizon router), and was doing (VPN), was not supported, and that he wouldn't do anything to check my circuit or provide any support at all. I was just about ready to go back to cable just so I could get a day's work done.

So when the Verizon tech called me and told me that he had read my email, he said that he had tested the circuit and noticed that it was, indeed failing, I was elated.

Thanks Verizon. I'm here to stay.

I have received a new router.  I tested it for a couple days and the issue seems to be solved.
