Is the 1.5 - 3mbs speed good enough for online games.

I currently have comcast and am thing about switching to direct tv, but i need internet as well.  I play some online MMO computer games as well as games like Call of Duty Black opps on my PS3.  My question is, does anyone eles play the same type of games and use the dsl from verizon to do so? Is the 3mbs speed good enough for these types of games with little to no lag?

thanks for any feed back!

1.5-3Mbps service is enough to run games on. If you get 3Mbps along with FastPath on the line (something you'll find out when the DSL line is set up), it should be smooth sailing from there. I wouldn't expect being host all the time, though.

I'm a PC Gamer myself, and also have a rather large network. While bandwidth is tight around here since I have a 1Mbps connection, I have no problems playing games such as Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on my connection from my PC. I do get occasional lag which is typically from heavy Internet usage in my home (quite common) or if the server hosting company oversold their dedicated server boxes.

The only video watching I do is on YouTube and Vimeo, with some other video content on other websites. Sometimes I'll watch the occasional game trailer from Steam. I have yet to do Netflix myself but others who have used my connection haven't complained about Netflix. Since I'm on a 1Mbps connection though, I have to stick with the lowest quality video if I do not want to buffer up. If my line is idle, I can go to 480p quality on sites such as YouTube and not worry about Buffering. A 3Mbps connection should be comfortable enough for 720p streams from Netflix and YouTube, with maybe 30 or so seconds of buffering needed at most. Netflix does that automatically, but you can force the video quality to another setting. It's Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S on the PC.

The only speed-related  issue you might bump across if it isn't from congestion, would be if you wind up with Verizon's infamous Juniper router problem. You won't know if you get hit with this problem until after you've been turned up and have ran speed tests. It is a correctable problem in most cases still, but the "Fix" may only be temporary since it involves being moved to older equipment that is soon to be phased out. I can diagnose that for you once the DSL line is turned up, if you're suspicious about the speeds you're getting.

Hi.  I would NOT recommend Verizon for gaming.  My son uses XBox CODBB etc.   When he connects directly and I'm on my computer, his game tends to lag.  When we have him connect wireless, it's not even worth him playing his games.  We are thinking of switching to Comcast ourselves.  Mind  you we have copper wiring and I guess this does not help our connection.  Nor has Verizon offered to come look at these issues.  They simply tell us to shut the router on and off.  Or they change my IP address.  Obviously, I'ved had very poor service with Verizon.  Just my two cents.

With most gaming the issue is more likely to be latency than actual connection speed. The things you typically require speed for is the downloading of Music and Video. For example music from Itunes is about 1 million bytes  (8 million bits)  per minute of program. HD Television uncompressed is almost 2.5 million Bytes (20 million bits). Standard definition Television is often as low as 250k bytes per second (2 million bits per second).

So my advice would be to run tracert's to several gaming sites from your current Comcast connection, and see how many hops it takes, and what the transmission time is. Then find one of your neighbors (on the same block)  with Verizon DSL and do the same. As long as the latency (timings) and hop count are similar the results should be similar. However if there is a significant disparity between the timings, the one with the fastest timings is likely to be noticeably better. In theory it shouldn't make much difference, but some ISP run their internal networks much closer to ultimate capacity than others.

Speeds via Wireless are all over the map because there are many many external factors that can degrade wireless performance. WiFi runs in spectrum that is allocated to several different applications, and as long as the intent isn't to interfere with another application, it is all legitimate use. So you or your neighbors cordless telephone can interfere, and can your neighbors wireless network, and a host of other devices. The fastest, and most reliable connections are never going to be via wireless.

Many routers do support Quality of Service or QoS. This allows you to prioritize the traffic on your router. Verizon actually makes extensive use of QoS for FiOS customers. Setting up QoS isn't a trivial exercise however.

I have the 1.5-3 service, but consistently get 750-1100 only. i used to get 2200 or higher, but those number i haven't seen in awhile.

I just had some problems fixed (took 2 weeks) where my upload speed was correct, but download was 50-75. un-usable. they thought it was a bad wire in my  line, so swtiched to the other. dsl works, but now we have no dial tone on our phones.

I'm still getting 1000 or less. But my son has been playing xbox online with the wireless n connection and doesn't complain about it.

Netflix streaming is fine, too.
