Why no DSL?

I live less tha 1/2 mile away from a Verizon phone 'office' (a large unmanned building which connects calls in my neighborhood), which has been served by a fiber optic cable for several years now. I'm curious why Verizon won't offer dsl service in my neighborhood? Neighbors a couple miles away live much farther from their 'office' (6 miles or more), yet they have dsl access. The population density is identical in both neighborhoods.

I have been trying to get DSL for over 5 years. Do one seems to care. I would say that there are more than 100 residents in this one area that can not get DSL. I have even contacted the county commisioner with no luck. I wonder if I will be stuck with dial-up for the rest of my life.
