How to get phone number that we have had for over 20 years back?

How to get phone number that we have had for over 20 years back after phone number mistakenly disconnected?  We changed out internet service from Verizon to Suddenlink.   Our phone service was not supposed to be changed.  Our number was disconnected.   We have called Verison and after two hours on the line were told that we have to wait 30 - 90 days before requesting the number back and if during that time the number is given out to somoen else, too bad.

Any suggestion on who to contact to fix this?
