MIFI 8800l JetPack Suddenly Drops Connection

Hello - I've had the 8800l since about 2 days after it was released.  Up to about 4 days ago, it had been working without a glitch.  Good speeds, always connected.

However, it now has started to randomly drop the internet connection.  I've been tethering it mostly, and usually only when I have to debug something with my home network, I'll connect to it via WIFI.  The internet connection is lost on both the usb and via the WIFI.  I have to restart the unit, and it connects right back up again without a problem.  But, now it's almost a 100% guarantee that at some point it will disconnect again.

I've done some monitoring of the logs, and it doesn't seem to log an error of any kind when the drop happen.  The unit seems unaware of it, and nothing is noted.  I'm posting the contents of the system log here (the mobile network log seems pretty useless).  Something to note is that the unit seems to triggering it's own restarts quite often - many more than the number of time I've had to manually restart the unit to get the internet connection back.  Whatever is causing it to do it's own restarts might be part of the problem ??

Kristi46773, our goal is to ensure that any issues you are having with your Jetpack devices are resolved as quickly as possible. You mentioned that you have found a fix for your 8800 model, so do you still have an issue with it or the 7730 model at this time? If you're still having an issue, does this happen only indoors/outdoors or both? What devices are you connecting to each Jetpack?

Too bad this did NOTHING to fix the problem...  It changed a couple things, like reconnects are quicker, but it still consistently reboots on it's own about the same frequency...  Way to go on the testing department Verizon..  nice work...   I mean really.. Coming from a software testing background, just how is it that you guys can not test these things out before dumping on the public??  Unreal... You figured you;d blast these broken leftover pieces of hardware out of your inventory on the unsuspecting public by giving them a steal of a deal on unlimited internet that can't even be used?  Making the decision to bring this hunk of junk in to upgrade negates our unlimted plan.. so we are all stuck with this thing...  bad move people.. You think the public is just that stupid?  Do you not see the class action lawsuit coming your way?

This is the most frustrating experience I have ever had with Verizon and I have been with them since they were Alltell! 

I have the most current update; I have Reset the mifi; I have made sure not to over charge it; I have Disconnected all devices except my laptop. All of this and it is still dropping...if anything, it has got worse recently. It is near the end of December and I have unlimited data...as a matter of fact, this is a business Mifi so the data speeds do not even slow down. 

I am very Close to switching to another cell phone provider at this point because so much of my wife's work and my work are internet dependent.

I've had 2 of these 8800L (one a replacement for the first) and the same problem as above.  I'm on the latest release and the thig would constanltly drop and disconnect.   I've gone back to my 6620L which may, in theory, be slower but at least its reliable and experiences no dosconnect issues like this $200 piece of junk.   As far as I'm concerence, I'm out $200 unless Verizon fixes the issue.   I'll keep monitorin this topic, but for now, its just not worth the trouble.

I have a similar issue and mine is left plugged in most of the time as well. I've noticed a smell of hot/burnt electronics that's noticeable if I take the back cover off. I live about 5 miles from the   Canadian border and when my 8800L disconnects, it will reconnect to the cell networks up there and stay connected just fine (on roaming). Prior to this, it would be fine for days at a time.

Rebooting does not fix my disconnect issue. It just seems to come back whenever it pleases.

Edit: I've never seen nor personally had a device issue resolved through the Verizon forums here. I suspect the forums are good for questions about configuration-related issues, but if you suspect a hardware problem (which is all I ever wanted someone here to confirm), I think it's best to take your device into a Verizon store.

I just pulled the battery on my 8800L and left it outside in the cool breeze for a half an hour. It's back on Verizon 4G. I'll have to see if keeping it off the charger periodically will work as a solution.

I still don't think it's unreasonable to expect a hotspot like this to be plugged in 24/7 (my city's EMS has Verizon hotspots like these in their trucks which are left plugged in) and it seems pretty unacceptable to have to deal with an issue like this. Thanks for the idea @Kristi46773! Hopefully this will work as a stop-gap until I can bring it in to Verizon.

Aloha, I just wanted to chime in and add my name as someone who is also experiencing the Jetpack 8800l dropped internet issue (not to be confused with a dropped cellular connection which is NOT the problem) that everyone else on this blog has been discussing.  My troubles seem to have begun about five days ago although, as a fulltime RV'er parked in desolate AZ desert prior to five days ago, I don't really know when the issue arose.  It had worked well enough prior to that.

I just spent the better part of an hour with a level 2 technical support rep and he has begun a trouble ticket that will advance to back of the house technicians after 24hrs of device "observation."  Important to note that the tech recognized the multiple 921.6MB data flow cutoffs in my data usage file.

Also, I tried to exchange my Jetpack at a corporate Verizon store in Yuma, AZ today and was told I would have to give up the device to them while I waited for the replacement to arrive in at their store (I have no local delivery address).  I protested their "policy" to take possession of the original device (which of course prevents me from having any internet at all) before they could order it's replacement (nevermind simply exchanging it with one they have in stock) as ludacris and they simply shrugged and sent me on my way.

If it weren't for the fact that I can't find any other provider with unlimited data at $70 per month, I'd drop these bozos in a heartbeat.

Well this has been an interesting read this Saturday morning. Currently I'm having the same issues as you gentlemen are describing down To a T. Except my issue is with last years flagship the 7730L, and my plan has only been active not even 12 hours. My hopes suddenly rose up as I discovered this "prepaid unlimited jetpack" plan because it reminded me of when I signed a 2 year contract for the 7730L with a truly unlimited data plan but then was robbed via 15gig cap. During that small time period of glorious internet freedom, there wasn't 1 time I had ANY disconnect issues as we are exprienecing NOW.

I'll go ahead an add myself as another user experiencing this issue to the list. I have the 7730L and right around 920 MB used, it cuts off. Tomorrow will be a week since I had a ticket created on the issue. Not terribly impressed by the poor communication, with the only updates I've gotten on it have been the automated messages sent to the jetpack saying that it's being "investigated." I can understand if there are a lot of people affected by it and that they just wany to focus on fixing it, but at that point I would think it'd be better to make some sort of public announcement about the issue.

EDIT: I got a message from someone from Network Repair this morning. A day after I made this post, funnily enough. But it's fixed for me now, so I can only recommend people who still have this issue to definitely call and get a ticket made. It took a week to get it fixed, and my point on communication still stands, but at least it's fixed. They said they made an update over the network in order to fix the issue, which sounds different from what others had done for them. Maybe they're finally getting the bug tracked down and worked on. Good luck to those who are having this issue.

Could you potienally just reset the hotspot before engaging in an activity that requires no dc'ing(gaming for exp)? That way you atleast know its not going to happen mid game. Personally I haven't tracked my data to see when my reboots accure yet.

Sure, but we shouldn't have to. Nothing like being mid-movie already having reset it twice (I was sick yesterday and watched movies all day, had to reset a few times) while in the middle of something.
I love your objectivity, but we shouldn't have to reset anything...ever. Unlimited is unlimited. If you want to say unlimited but you have to reset every 921.6MB, then say that. But don't tout it as unlimited, give it to you for a few months and then figure out that maybe consumers are taking you at your word, that it's unlimited. It's like their version of throttling.
And depending how long you play, it very well could happen in the middle of the game, or the movie, or the show binging, or even just surfing.

We certainly want you to be able to use your device to it's full capabilities to get the most out of your network. If we have completed troubleshooting of the device, and submitted a ticket. The best course of action at this time is to simply wait for the resolution, as our technicians will be able to find the best solution for the issue.

I am also having this problem and I'm losing work and consequently my income because of it! Mine also seems to drop out around 920MB. I get a huge spike in ping and then lose the connection. I end up having to reconnect in the middle of a meeting. Plus, my Macbook Pro [all of a sudden] won't recognize the Jetpack again until I've restarted my laptop! 

It is the most frustrating issue. I went with Verizon for the first time because of the amazing speed and dependability. I'm losing out on the dependability. 

I need an answer because I can not afford to lose any more time by having to reschedule my clients over and over!

I noticed this thread is nearing 2 months old and seeing if there was any resoultion to the dropped sessions on the 8800L?    I am seeing this issue at 4 hour increments, no matter how much data passes.  Seems like Verizon is triggering the disconnect, unless they have some technical soultion or bug.

any ideas?

Just to confirm, is your 7730L on the $65.00 prepaid unlimited plan? What city are you in currently, and what are the closest street intersections? Are any other Verizon Wireless devices having trouble with their data or voice services, that you know of?

My 8800L dropped out many times/day whether it is connected to internet or not and reboots itself.

A senior tech support at Verizon suggested removing my wireless network connection and setting up a new wireless network connection. I even used the same network name and same password. I haven't had a dropped connection since.

I've found that the 8800L seems very sensitive to heat. If I keep it cool, it seems to help with dropouts.
