What is the difference between the original version of the network extender compared to the 4G?

The original Network Extender was only capable of connecting to the 1xRTT and 3G EDVO network for the phones to handle the voice calls and access to the slower data network.
The 4G network extender uses VoLTE to handle the voice calls over the 4G network.
