What are the options for texting while overseas?

my son has been deployed to afghanistan..what would be the best plan for us to text back and forth and do roaming charges apply?

If he is using his Verizon phone with his Verizon service, then yes, there will be very expensive roaming. Unless you both are prepared for very large bills, he should put his phone in airplane mode and turn on only wifi.

With wifi, you can use a messaging app such as Skype, whatsapp, facebook messages etc. and communicate that way for no charge, except for any wifi charges.

If you tell us what phone he has, there may be other good options while he is on wifi with wifi calling.
