What do i need for my unlocked s9 to work in Philippines while on vacation

I am going on vacation to Philippines.  What do I need so my service is still available.?  I need to be able to communicate with locals and use as translation device

But isn’t unlocked means, you will be able to put any simcard to it. 

What if I don't want to avail international plan. I want to use their sim card. It wont work?
