Horribly slow jetpack at 3G

Two days ago I added the Jetpack 4G LTE AC791L to my account hoping it would solve my home internet service problem. I already have the new unlimited data plan that gives 10gb at 4G, then 3G speeds.  I was told by the sales rep (Josh) that the 3G speeds would still be faster than what I was experiencing with my current ISP.  First big mistake - I didn't ask what those speeds would be like.

I have been using my S5 as a hotspot for several years and always get great speeds.  I rarely exceeded 10gb because I was only using it when my home internet service was misbehaving. Recently that service has almost stopped working and I need a new solution. I have few choices since I am in a rural area.  The jetpack seemed like a decent solution.  Except that since getting it, and already having used 7.5gb, I reached 10 gb rapidly. And my service essentially dropped from over 6.0 mbps to .60 or slower mbps.   Worse than the ISP when it works.

I still can return this device and not be stuck with the 2 year contract.  Before I do that I am hoping there is some other answer to getting a speed that is usable - 1.5 mbps would be nice and it is certainly still a major reduction from 6.0 or higher.  I feel that I was deceived by the sales rep into what 3G speeds would mean.  Typical [Removed] I have come to expect from Verizon Wireless.  If there was another cell carrier that had good signal in my location I would switch. But nothing is available. Sad because I live in northern Ohio which is heavily populated but Verizon is the only semi-decent cell service available.

Anyone have any suggestions for getting better speeds on 3G, or other affordable alternatives for internet service in rural areas? Already tried satellite (big joke).

Thanks

I have the same problem, as I got the jetpack and not even made aware of the reduced speed after 10 gb, salesperson say it was unlimited data and I was going to be able to use it at home or take it around, once the 10gb are used the connections goes to .50 mbps

I deeply apologize for any inconvenience with your jetpack. I can assure you it's never our intention to give false information or withhold important facts. I am a customer too and I expect to know what I am getting into when I purchase something.

Keep in mind that your Jetpack does have Unlimited Data, but to ensure that all of our customers can enjoy the network, hotspot devices do have a limit of 10GB of 4G data to prevent congestion on the network.

There are ways to reduce the amount of data your Jetpack is using, which will also allow it to stream better on 3G. This would vary depending on the app you're using such as Netflix, Spotify, etc. These adjustments are typically found under the settings for each app.

jetpack_3g,

I absolutely understand the concern and need for speed. It's essential that you are able to rely on your devices. What do you typically connect to your jetpack, and while you are using that device, what apps do you use? The reason I ask, is that depending on the applications in use, there are various things that can be done to improve the experience. For example, if you are streaming video, you can lower the video quality in the application so that it will stream better via lower speeds.

Dear EricaC_VZW

When I talked to the salesman Emmanuel Frederick (Solutions Specialist) at my local store (176 Terrace Lane Morristown, TN 37813 I certainly discussed my needs and wants as far as internet service and was told I could replace my home internet service (fibernet) with the Jetpack since this was "unlimited",

but as soon as it used the 10gb I could not do much that all, (google search and email lookup but not downloads or uploads definitely no video streaming even on low settings with .50mbps)

and so, like you suggested I could reduce the amount of streaming  to the point that I need to have my old Fibernet service back to do the things that I can not do with the jetpack and If I still need to pay for the Fibernet, I no longer have use for the jetpack but I am over the 15 days limit to returned without paying extra $ 179.00

Reducing the amount of data is not my solution

I appreciate the additional details. It saddens me to learn we did not set the proper expectations with you when you made the Jetpack purchase. Just to get a better understanding of the steps that have already been done, have you spoken with the store yet to see what options they will give you for returning the Jet pack? Keep us posted.

Exact same situation here in rural northeast Indiana, and same experience with my new Jetpack.  Very disappointed in the misinformation given by our sales rep.  She shared how her family goes over 10g every month and they never experience any change in connection speed.  Lucky her!

Sometimes I think I should have stayed with my original plan and not gone unlimited. It would save having to listen to my kids complain. I thought I was getting a deal as I was paying overages every month. Not so! Will be a long 2 years for me.
