I want to connect my WiFi5510L hockey puck via USB to a windows 7 machine. I have had the puck connected to windows XP machines and have setup the puck as a tethered only (wifi off) device and it works. But microsoft seems to have discombobulated XP machines and they run about 10% the speed they had been running.
I have tried connecting the puck to windows 7 machines, but although windows 7 recognizes the puck as a USB device and a NDIS internet device, windows 7 does not complete the connection in some way and can't send or receive data through it. Windows 7 troubleshooting says there is no IP data for the device.
I've looked for drivers, the search function in verizon troubleshooting is useless, no answers found on the community

Windows XP needs a driver, Windows 7 and up come with the necessary driver support. No IP address suggests a communications problem that may be caused by faulty USB3 support in the Windows 7 machine. Windows 7 does not have native USB3 support and it must come from the USB3 hardware manufacturer. Windows Update may have an optional hardware update.
You can try to disable USB3 support in the computer's Bios Setup, doing this alone may resolve the issue, but this is only a test and not a final solution. If the 5510L works when USB3 is disabled then you probably need to update the USB3 driver from the hardware OEM.
Advanced solution:
Any modern Asus wireless router that advertizes 3G/4G support works with that Jetpack when USB Tethered to the Asus router. You have to manually change the default IP address and subnet of the Asus to make it work, but that's easy enough to do. Then, you use Ethernet between the computer and the Asus. Other computers can also connect to the Asus via Wi-Fi or Ethernet and use the Jetpack too. Walmart stocks one, if necessary go to Walmart.com and key in the search box: 50179416, because neither URL below is working for me:

7e18n1: I already had done things like checking for updated drivers and whatnot. The connection I used was a USB2 connection, although it had the SS symbol next to it. I used the bios to force USB2 handling anyway with no joy.
What I finally ended up doing was forcing the IP settings manually. This gave me access to the "my.jetpack" settings but no internet connection and no indication on the hockey puck that I was connected. I fiddled around some more, mainly doing things I had already done and suddenly it started working. Don't ask me why, I ran out of technician's fairy dust after I became an engineer decades ago. Later I might try returning the USB to USB3 connections and see if it still works. If I feel lucky, maybe not.
I also ordered the ASUS wifi router you suggested (although through amazon) and also bought a slightly newer version which said it would run USB internet connections. They'll do as quick and dirty backups if the computer fails.

It not working with USB2 is strange. I don't remember having to set an IP address. If you have any problem getting the Asus to work, post the system log file so I can see what its doing. Besides the IP address you may have to enable Dual WAN support. Beyond that, it's pretty much plug and play. The USB Modem / USB Tethering page only needs to be ON, USB Modem, and Automatic if the IP address on the first LAN page is 192.168.2.1. The System log should show it being recognized, given an IP address, the time getting set, the time on the log entries changing to the correct time (after Administration > System: set time zone and DST settings).
I turn off Wi-Fi in the Jetpack and enable the DMZ with 192.168.1.2 so it bypasses the Jetpack's firewall letting the Asus handle both.
