Number beside the phone icon

I have a #1 beside the "phone" icon. I don't have a voicemail, text or email. So what would the number be for? And how do I get it off?

If you dont have a message then you have a missed call that hasn't been cleared. goto your call log in the phone icon and look for the entry that has the green line next to it.
