Once you download and install Zune (go to zune.net), it should automatically sync with Windows Media Player. You'll see your music library, as well as the photos you've stored on your computer. Then simply connect via USB and drag and drop. This is all free. You don't have to purchase a Zune Pass to listen your own music or to subscribe to podcasts -- just if you want to "rent" music with 10 songs to keep per month.

Your explanation has me feeling a little bit concerned.

I haven't purchased the phone yet. But I've been browsing the manual. page 71 of the Twom manual (link) doesn't mention Windows Media Player; so I was assuming that videos and music that I want to transfer from the computer to the phone have to first be dragged and dropped into the "Zune software Collection" folder.

I don't use and want nothing to do with Windows Media Player. I disliked it so much that I removed it from my computer. Does installing the Zune software force-install Windows Media Player and does using the Zune software force the customer to use Windows Media Player ?

I didn't do anything with the settings after installing, but all my music from WMP was in my Collection, as well as my photos. However, I do remember a menu for setting sync options (sync nothing, new photos only, music manually, etc.). I don't think you'll be forced to use WMP for anything ... I never even had to open it.

When you first install Zune it will give you the option to chose where your music and photo files are. Does not matter if WMP is installed or synced to anything. ( You can also choose and change locations from the settings menu). Just open the file location folder and drag and drop onto the phone icon.

When you transfer from the phone to the PC the files will be placed into the designated folders

You don't need WMP to access your music.  You can use the Zune software to locate your music and sync it with the phone.  It will also sync pictures taken with your phone camera.  Now if we could only sync contacts!

I think i know what you are getting confused about. Yes, you do need the Zune software to transfer music to your phone. In fact, the only way to connect the phone to the computer is with the Zune software (for music, videos, picture syncing, etc). However, the Zune software is like iTunes; it is FREE. It is just a media-playing program, like windows media player. I think you are getting it confused with Zune Marketplace, which is microsoft's online store that does cost money. You do not need to get marketplace, but you can subscribe if you want to (the phone comes with a 14 day free trial, i didn't bother, though.)

If you have an iPod (or iTouch, etc), think of it in a very similar fashion. It can only be synced with teh computer through iTunes. Sadly, Microsoft restricted the Kin phones much like apple does with its iPods, to where you can't use it as a 'mass storage device'.  Thats fine with me though, cause flash drives are so cheap these days anyways and all i need my phone for is a phone, camera, and perhaps in the future a music player.

True, there are side programs that make it possible to go without it, but with Apple's and Microsoft's design, that was the intention of just using their own dedicated software. Its just an analogy. I read markspace works with the Kin phones, for Mac users out there.
