I decided to use some old standby apps to control the VERY slow LED used for SMS/MMS. The light is MUCH more dim and the time between single flash SMS and double flash email is about 10-15 sec. All other notifications are fast enough with 2 secs in between.
Light Flow and Light Manager, both apps can control to a degree, but LF spazzes the rear light (epileptic-strobe speed) and neither can control the front LED until the screen is unlocked. At that point, it is too late, as you already are into your notifications.
Anyone with any luck regarding light management?
Now the LEDs don't work at all.
Quite possibly another limitation placed on apps by Google in Lollipop.
