When I select an event itself and tap the pencil to edit, it allows me to choose the time of notification and type of notification. Either email or phone notification. But it will not allow me to go deeper and change notification sounds or settings, like vibration, etc.
I'm using the stock calendar app that is on the phone, not a downloaded one, or google one. Maybe I should venture into trying a different calendar.

I can't seem to find a version # for our stock app.

How about this? Anything look different here compared to yours?
What if I do a factory reset, think that will help?

HOLD THE PRESSES, I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!!
All of you have been using and or giving me the steps to follow using the Calendar APP. While I have been using the Calendar WIDGET this whole time. Although very similar, the widget has less options to personalize it. I am so happy now that I finally found the answer. I won't miss any more notifications for calendar events! With my hearing problems and memory issues this is really a big deal.

I thought that settings within the app controlled the widget notifications.

I had the same problem, and was never able to get the notification to sound more than once, so the first I would see that a calendar event was coming up was when I saw it on my phone's screen (I never had this problem with the old flip phone: It would beep for a minute until I responded to the calendar alert.)
The fix for me was to go to Google Play and download/install a free app "Calendar Sounds", which made the calendar app sound for a selectable period, long enough to get my attention.
