Difficulty answering a call

When phone is in standbye I have missed numerous calls while attempting to answer. Swipe up to unlock and nothing happens or push the green "answer" button and again nothing happens so I push it again and after a delayed response I now have pressed the "end" call button which occupies the same space as the "answer" call button. Smart it may be but phone is also part of its primary function.
