With my iphone if I received an email with a picture attached it opened in the email and I could view it, but with my G2 it requires that I download the picture, is there a way to change this?

You can go to settings in your Gmail, select your account, and scroll down to the bottom where you can check the box for Download attachments. This isn't directly saving the file to the phone, but it is allowing it to download temporarily so that you can view it. If you are referencing the stock email app, I'm not sure as I don't use that app any longer.
