I have noticed that since 4.4.2 update that I CAN receive and send MMS WITHOUT wifi or mobile data turned on.   Anyone else?

Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing.  I don't have to leave data on, nor when I receive an MMS do I have to temporarily turn data on long enough to get the pic, cause usually everything tries to update at the same time and killing a bit more data.  I just remember having to have data on in 4.2.2 JB and I have tested this out a couple times on 4.4.2  Unless MMS data is handled differently now, which IDK why that would be, I have no idea why this works now, at least for me.

Interesting, you can send MMS messages without wifi or mobile data? I'm not sure how that would work. Magic, I guess. With the newer More Everything Plans, users have unlimited Messaging, including sending and receiving MMS. MMS data doesn't count against your main data plan, but is provisioned from your messaging data, which is unlimited.   Good luck,

Yeah, SMS uses the voice stream, which is strange considering text is data.  But yeah, don't have to use mobile data anymore for media messaging.  Awesome.  Limited messaging/data or not, mms uses data even (or so I thought) if not counted toward plan amount.

Also, with data disabled I cannot surf or check email, so I know I dont have a data connection at the time I deal with MMS.

Remember: Voice, messaging, and "data" are all really data. It's just a question of how they're transmitted, which boils down to the quantity of data involved and the speed required. I'm not saying you're wrong about anything you say. Just that there's nothing objectively impossible about using the voice or messaging stream for something that once went via mobile data or wi-fi. It's not like voice is analog and data is digital.

This goes back to a previous post in that mobile data is never truly off and therefore some types of data can go through (mms/text) but not other types (web browser, app updates.)

SMS/MMS has NEVER used the data package.  It is sent on the control bands of the voice connection.  There are many programs available today that reroute SMS and MMS messages over your data package.  The Verizon Messages app is one of those apps.  Apple's iMessage is another app that also reroutes SMS and MMS messages over your data package.
