Frustrated. Have 18GB monthly allowance. Knew I went over by 1 GB then turned data off. Within 2 days of going over allowance received text that I was 90% into 2nd allowance, 2 days later received text that I was 90% over 3rd allowance, the same day, 12 hours later I received a text that I was 90% into the 4th, 10 minutes later I received a text that I was 90% into the 5th, 11 minutes later I received a text that I was 90% into the 6th, 20 minutes later I received a text that I was 90% into the 7th and finally 21 minutes later I received the final text saying I was 90% into the 8th allowance. Now all these texts kept arriving during the night while I was sleeping, data turned off. My online data allowance report says 4.5 GB were used that evening when I wasn't on my phone. I called Verizon and the Tech told me after 140 mins. on the phone that it is showing that I am never connected to wifi even though my phone says I am. Has anyone else had such an extreme bizarre situation? Verizon is sure I don't know how to connect to wifi since it shows that data is being used continually from the allowance, even when it's turned off. How do you use data when you're sleeping at a rate of 4.5GB in addition to it being turned off. My phone says I'm connected to wifi so why is it that Verizon is saying it shows I haven't been connected. Feel like I'm going crazy and I am so conscious of not going over. Just want to know what it is that I'm doing to go over at such extremes.

Thanks. That is a good question. If I understand what the rep told me to do correctly, he said to "tap" data usage on the phone and it would take 2-3 days to give you a break down. I didn't really understand that. The phone is not with me now. I plan to do that tonight.Will that step show me what apps are using the data and if the phone's data matches my Verizon online data allowance report?

I have the G3 too. And as i read your post i could hear the twilight zone theme in my head. Especially when i read that it happens even with your phone off. I leave my phone on all the time and that hasn't happened to me, or to the Mrs. with her G3.I'd suggest that you double check all your settings. They may not all be set to install and/or update over wifi only.

What does the phone's data usage show you've used for the same time period, and which apps are using the data?

Yes, thanks, I'm aware that could be the case but literally, nothing going on at all to warrant that usage, even with lag time reporting.

Someone else will confirm this I know: Data polling times vary and play catch up as towers report in lump sums instead of on a constant basis. Could have been you were in the middle of some large file at the time and it just so happened to be big enough to cross the threshold before you knew it.

FWIW: When in Settings | Mobile Data, select Menu and select Show WiFi Data.

In this way the display will have two tabs that display data and can be scrolled to see the programs using it, one for Cellular Data and one for WiFi Data.

High WiFi usage for example will cause the battery to decline faster. Hopefully someone doesn't bump up against a limit with WiFi for their ISP, but it's still a good debugging tool.
