LG G4 is an Android device is why I am asking. If you used a custom launcher it may be the cause of your problems.

I ended up removing the account and then re adding it. That worked!

An unexpected notification like that can certainly cause some questions.  Let me get a bit more information here. Who is the email provider?  Have you checked all subfolders (including your spam)?
