Go to settings in your message app. Then look for "auto retrieve mms". If the box is unchecked. Then check it and try again by asking someone to text you a pic.

Even with auto-retrieve disabled, wouldn't there be a "Download" message indicating manual download?

Yes, but once my wife enabled auto retrieve mms on her G3. She stopped receiving "download" and manual download was no longer necessary.

Yeah, I wanted to make sure there was no notification of this message on the message screen inside the app. OP didn't say there was any error or instruction, only that they did not receive MMS.
