Did you try clearing the cache for the Voice Mail app?
Settings App.
Application Manager.
Scroll over to All.
Scroll down to Voice Mail.
Clear Cache.

Yes and also closed the app that way to no avail.
The fact that this doesnt work says there is a bigger conflict at hand

Voicemail icon/app broken for me as well. Just force closes when I press on it. I did all the usual stuff - cleared the cache, removed and re added the icon, nothing works. Gave up and removed the icon and added *86 to my contacts. Annoying. Didn't call Verizon as I figured it would be a waste of time.

While it might seem like a waste of time to call them, I think its the only way the issue will become urgent enough to issue a software fix. I dont think a majority of the people with a G3 are using this feature and thus dont know its broken

I setup my VM this past weekend (8/31/14). However, today (9/1/14) I get "Data service N/A" all day, however I login to my data usage and it still shows data usage even though I was not able to get VM or browse the internet.

I found in another posting that uninstalling Google+ fixes it. Which I did do, then soft reboot and VVM seemed to work today; i.e. it showed a time on it that it checked to vm, even though I did not have any.
why does community forum has different login that the main site? It's frustrating that you can't just click on the email to read and reply to postings, you need to do too much clicking.
