marshmallow update caused LG keyboard to stop working

Following last nights update to what i believe to be the marshmallow update, my LG G3 now has a constant alert/prompt saying "Unfortunately LG keyboard has stopped". This makes the phone nearly unusable as I can't type or search. Every time i click ok, it pops up again a moment later. Doing a hard reset and factory reset doesn't help as it seems to just add the update at power up again. What can I do to get me phone functional again?

Updates are designed to enhance the phone, not hinder. Let’s see what's causing the problem. Do you receive this error when sending a text message or via the browser, please clarify.

I can't send a text because I can't type at all unfortunately. The error

just pops onto the screen when it powers up, or anytime i touch the screen

to do something.

Here is the whole saga of the day:

Yesterday morning an alert popped up saying a new android update is

scheduled to install and I could select the time, so I picked 10 pm when I

knew it could be plugged in. I thought it was strange there was an update since

a couple of weeks ago the OS updated which resulted in some icons looking

different, the shutdown screen being different, phone call screen changes

and such. It seemed fine after the initial update weeks ago. Anyways, last

night after the power down and power up update as soon as it was done and I

unlocked the screen the notification box popped up saying "Unfortunately,

LG keyboard has stopped" with an ok button to push. The next time i touch

the touchscreen, the same notification box pops up. I can scroll through

the phone, i can tap on icons, but anywhere I would need to type (search

bar, log into email, etc) the keyboard feature won't come up. Hence now I

can't even re load my gmail accounts onto the phone.

First I went into settings/backup & reset/factory data reset. I took my SD

card out first and then went through with that. Result = as soon as it

powered back up, the first thing I saw is the Notification box saying

"Unfortunately, LG keyboard has stopped".

So then:

Then I tried the "hard reset" feature where the phone is turned off and

then I hold the down toggle button and power button at the same time. I

powers up in "System recovery" mode where you can use the toggle buttons

to select start in safe mode, USB debug mode, wipe cache, power up, factory

reset, etc. I selected Factory data reset and once it powered down,

reinitialized, came back up to the same problem. It is confusing to me as

it sounds like a software problem, but a back to out of the box reset with

not repeat a software issue I thought.

When it powered up from the reset it said "Android is starting" optimizing

app 1 of 224 and would spend 10 minutes or so going through all 224 like it

has in the past when android has sent out an updated OS (i guess that is

the right term). I don't run a bunch of aftermarket apps on the phone,

facebook and a flashlight are about it.

Current software info is:

Android version 6.0

Android security patch 2016-03-01

Baseband version: VS985-MPSS.DI.2.0.1.c1.13-00108-M8974AAAAANPZM-1

Kernal version: 3.4.0-perf-gdcb0dd0lge@android-build

Build number: MRA58K

Configuration version: J13.LGE.VS985.0

Software version: VS98547A

Software status: Official

When I try settings/Language & input/LG keyboard it shows the gear/cog to

the right to click on, but clicking on it does nothing but the screen

flashes black, then it comes back to Settings window with the same

notification box saying "unfortunately, LG keyboard has stopped"

So, any thoughts on how to get functionality back? I do live off of the

darn thing you know.

Sincerely, Adam

Thank you so much for such thorough details on  your experience, G3fan. I've got a clear picture of what's going on. Your device definitely has the most recent software version. What we've got to do now is figure out what could have gone wrong with the update. From what I can see, you've explored a hard reset. However, it doesn't sound as if one was completed.

You said that the device had the same problem afterwards. Did you have to restore any of your user-added data (such as contacts, calendar events, apps, etc)?

I will need to restore user added data as the phone is wiped clean now. All

google accounts, contacts, messages, photos are gone. It is like I took it

out of the box. Because i can't type anything, I can grab any contact or

account info from the cloud and such. Screen savers gone, app arrangement

gone, any existence of how I had it 24 hours ago is gone, so it seems to

have completely erased it's former life. I fear when it powers up, it

updates itself to the new version that is causing the issue. Looking on the

message boards i am seeing similar complaints from the last 24 hours of

G3's that updated and are now going haywire. Thoughts???

Thanks for those details G3fan. Having your phone in original condition is the main goal when doing a factory reset, as this will resolve any post software issues that you were experiencing after updating your software. I recommend testing for a few days; I trust that a factory reset has resolved any issues that you were experiencing when you updated the software.

Has not resolved it one bit. I even did the USB software upgrade assistant.

Still stuck with a phone that says LG keyboard not working. What is the

next step? Do I go to a store for a device exchange or what? Sincerely, Adam

Thanks G3fan,

I appreciate you trying the upgrade assistant. Have you tried a different keyboard to see if that does the trick? There are many to choose from in the Play Store. You can check them out on your computer too: market.android.com

I can't even type to search. There is no keyboard popping up when I click a

search bar. I am basically held hostage with the device as i can't type or

enter anything to crawl out of this mess. Any other ideas?
