when to use wifi

I just got my first smart phone LGG3  I was told that when you use WIFI it does not use up your data.  Should you activate WIFI when you turn on the phone how will you know you are out of the WIFI area

shilo10me70, welcome to the smartphone world! Using Wi-Fi is a great way to help save your cellular data usage. You will be able to see a little icon in the upper right hand corner. It will have half circles that get larger. The best way to see the actual icon is to follow this link: http://vz.to/15VLMqF Under the section that says "Device-Specific Support" click on 'View your User Guide'. Once that opens up you can always go to Page 21. This will give you a list of all the Phone's Status Icons.

You can always turn your Wi-Fi settings on in your settings: http://vz.to/15VMO5U If you have a secured wi-fi network at home you will be required to put in your wi-fi password. Once you have that information in the device and you leave the wi-fi switch on, any time you come home it will connect to the wi-fi services.

It does use data. It's just not deducted from your data allotment because you are connected to wifi, not mobile network. Please follow the instructions in the manual and you'll be fine.
