You need a file manager app to see the card and information that's stored there, and to move files to the card. Once the card is installed, you can store photos, music, videos and other files there, so they don't take up space on the internal memory of the tablet.
You can't store apps on the SD card, but sometimes you can store the app data there for later retrieval.
