Status bar alert won't return to connect to a pc via usb.

The usb connection alert no longer shows up in status bar, it did the first time but will not now. Have tried connecting to two different laptops.

Here to the rescue. Sorry to hear you are having issues with your tablet. Have you used a different USB cord to connect to laptop?  Is the tablet responding to charging?  Provide details to better assist.
