I keep getting a firmware update message every time i connect now. It's asking me for a password but my password is not working. Consistently. I am entering it exactly as it is on the back of the MifI. Anyone else have this problem?

Password is admin.  Then you go to a new screen and can set your own password.  Download the upgrade.  Unzip when it is complete. Go through the installation process.  Next use the usb cord to finish the istall.  (I had to use the usb cord from my phone to work with my MIFI)  because I did not get a usb cord with my Mifi.  Everything is working fine now.  Everything took approxiamately 15 minutes to complete.

Hope this helps.

Same problem as of today.  I'm copying the exact password from my wifi access on my laptop so I know it is right.

I just found the following information from the Mifi 4510L users guide to update the firmware.

1. Go the mifi admin page:  http://mifi.admin page.

2. Login into the page by using the default "admin" password.  Note: this is not the password for you mifi device.

3. You will then come to a screen that gives you instructions for downloading the latest firmware.

Hope this helps everyone.

One more thing.  The login field is in the upper right of the screen.  Type the default "admin" password and you should be able to download the latest firmware.

I use my MIFI at home and it works PERFECTLY--not a singly problem in 3 months. I DON'T WANT THE UPDATE! However, now that its available I must manually logon the verizon admin site to initiate access. Is there any way to cancel these "update notifications"?

Same issue.  How lame is this entire system?  Could they be any less clear about how this is supposed to work?  And, of course, no help at all from anyone at Verizon.

If someone gets a solution, I'll circle back and check.

I am also confused as to whether I need to have the USB cable connected to do this or not?  Some form of FREAKING INSTRUCTIONS might have been nice!

The "admin" password finally DID work for me.  It leads you to a download link.  Then you install drivers, restart, plug in the device via USB and run a small app that does the update.  Seems faster...

Very frustrating.  We are in the middle of a flood emergency here in Bloomsburg PA...and the Mifi update was poorly timed.  When I needed wireless most, it gave us nothing but headaches.  When electricity comes on again, I'll try your last suggestion.  So much for wireless.

Your firmware update was not successful then.  The MiFi will continue to inconvenience you until it can detect that the firmware update is complete.  Try to install the firmware update again.  Let us know if you are stuck on any of the steps.

Jambro,

The password on the tag/back of the device is not the correct password.  You need to use the Router Password to complete the firmware update.  By default the Router Password is "admin".  Reset your MiFi if you cannot remember your Router Password so the default password will work.

If you are having problems authenticating into the MiFi then use the following links below to download the firmware updates directly/manually:

Windows

http://d23fu4p2g5yz6c.cloudfront.net/Windows/MiFi4510LWin.zip

Mac

http://d23fu4p2g5yz6c.cloudfront.net/Mac/MiFi4510LMac.zip

The firmware update is a .zip which means you will have to extract the actual .exe before you can run the update.  Make sure you have your USB cable available before you attempt to update.

I wish I knew what folks are doing to make this work. I've been trying for several days...both on my desktop (uses a dongle) and my laptop. I can download the file (have done it many times). I can run the update.....everything is fine...until I get to the connection using the USB port. I connect, but (on the desktop) the  "OK" button never activates. On the Laptop the "OK" button activates, but nothing after that. It just sits and does nothing.......even ate breakfast while I waited for something to happen. I've tried several times...nothing. Even took out the battery and tried resetting the device. Nothing. Still getting the Update window each time I start my browser. Very frustrating!!!

Jack,

The desktop problem doesnt surprise me since you mentioned you are using a dongle.  The USB cord must be plugged directly into the MiFi in order for the update to complete, no dongles.  Some users have adopted techniques to splice thier USB cable to work around the charging features of the device.   If you modified your USB cable then the update will not work either.

As for your laptop if the OK button has enabled then your USB connection should be good.  That part is where most people get stuck.  You might want to try running the installation as Admin or disable UAC to see if you can get the installation to continue.  Make sure you are clicking the OK button when it activates.  The installation will not progress on its own until you click OK.  You can also try installing on a different USB port and see if you can make any more progress, that technique actually worked for someone else that I helped.

One last thing to try would be to watch Device Manager during your update process.  If you have any unknown "Novatel 4G" devices then you will have to install them first.  All of the devices need to be listed and installed when you run the firmware update or else you will continue to have problems.

I used "admin" as password. Clicked "OK" when it was activated......then nothing beyond that point. The computer was not crashed...it just does nothing more after clicking on the "OK" button. No further instructions.....nothing. What is "UAC" and how do I disable it? Tried both USB ports on my laptop. Still nothing.

I suspected the dongle might be the problem on the desktop...that's why I tried the laptop...it is wireless. The only difference between the two is that the laptop will activate the "OK" button.

I downloaded and printed instructions from Verizon website and followed them to the letter, but was stopped dead at #14.....the warning message never pops up....or anything else. I was stymied from that point on. Even very worried about doing anything due to the warning on the printed instructions. Finally had to disconnect the USB cable, but everything still works as before, so no damage done (so far).

Thanks for the attempted help.

How to disable UAC:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-window...

The MiFi 4510L is a wireless only device.  There is no reported way to enable a wired/tethered connection through a USB cable using a dongle or any other adapter.  If it ever worked on your desktop then you were connecting to it through a wireless adapter/card.

If UAC is not getting in the way then I am out of good ideas.  Some lame ideas include:

1. Rebooting the device and computer

2. Watching Task Manager while you run the installation to see if the install has kicked off in the background

3. Re-downloading the installation file.  There are links floating around with alternative downloads you could use
4. Check your Event Viewer for any logged error messages when launching the installation

5. Try another computer

6. Bring it into Verizon so they can complete the update for you/Provide a replacement

Let us know if you can find out more information about what is happening when you get stuck.
