Hi, I want to surprise my Dad with a new phone for Father's Day. He currently has an upgrade ready and I want to get him a new phone. Im on a plan along with others in my family but he is the main person. Is it possible to buy him a new phone at the store with one of our upgrades? Or does he have to be there with me in order for me to buy it?

If any line on said account is eligible for upgrade (phone lines only), then you can most certainly use that line as an alternate for the upgrade. But then it boils down to whether or not you are authorized on the account, and know the account's password to determine if you can get the phone without him (or someone who is authorized) there to make the purchase.

Keep in mind, though, that whichever line's upgrade is used to make that purchase would then result in a new 2 year contract on that number....

Well we are long time Verizon customers. He really likes Verizon so I dont see us ever changing. Would it be best to go to the local Verizon store and see what they say? I mean, we share the same last name, are on the same plan, and i mean to just buy the phone right there on the spot, take it home and surprise him with it.

In addition, he will lose his unlimited data if he has it. I think it's great you want to surprise your dad, but I think it's a bad idea. I would give him a card with a note that says you are buying him a new phone. Go with him to the store and let him pick out the phone he wants. If unlimited data is important to him, you will need to pay full retail price (edit). Maybe you could split the cost with him, etc.

There isn't an upgrade fee charged if the phone is purchased at full retail price.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
