Redeeming Device Dollars after device purchase?

I bought a new phone at a Verizon Wireless Authorized Dealer last week. I have $30 in Device Dollars and the salesman told me they were only valid on accessories, but that turned out to be incorrect. I read online that if you buy from a non-corporate store, redeemed Device Dollars are credited towards your monthly payment on your first bill after you get the phone. Can I redeem them now (after the purchase) and still have applied to my device payment?

They are for at time of purchase only.
Not worth a $50 restocking fee to redo the order to save $30.
Next time order online, you don't have to deal with an indirect store rep who lies to your face.
