I just received a phone message that said my Verizon account was suspended and that I should call an 800 number to get it re-established, Since my Verizon is working just fine, I sensed this was a scam phone call. After checking on "my Verizon" account, I confirmed that all is well. Unfortuntately, I did not write down the 800 number. Using Verizon's "contact us" and chat is very frustrating.........too restrictive and channels my attempts into pre-set topics. No identity fraud occurred, but might have if I weren't skeptical.

I appreciate your response and feedback. I am aware of the options available to block callers and use them regularly. My mobile number is in fact registered with the National Do Not Call Registry, though that will not help in this instance since the bogus caller is my own number.
To reiterate the issue, the caller ID was my own mobile number and appeared as "Voicemail". This appears to be a bad actor that has hacked my mobile number in that they are using it as the caller ID source when calling my mobile. If you have ever called your mobile from your mobile, it goes straight to your voice mail and will not "ring" the phone, so this is clearly a breach.
Perhaps Verizon might consider how to prevent such illegal activities in cooperation with other network giants to combine the resources necessary to put an end to such things if they so choose. Another possible option is a default block of any caller ID the matches the number being called. A simple solution that would at least eliminate this particular issue.
Thanks again.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated and we thank you for the additional detailed information. Based on the info you've shared with our team, it appears that you're experiencing Spoofing. False Caller ID/Caller ID Spoofing is a technique that allows a caller to change the caller identification associated with their number. Spoofing is not caused by an error in the network or your phone. Rather spoofing usually happens when the calling party uses any one of a number of pay services (such as Spooftel, Spoofer, and Spoof Card, etc.,), which provide a service that enables the calling party to change the message, sent as Caller ID. Apps offered by third parties that are not affiliated with Verizon offer the ability to manipulate or spoof the Share Name ID that appears to the person receiving your call. Verizon offers a service to assist you called Share Name ID. Share Name ID is a free service that allows you to customize the name that others will see on their screen when you call them. To view additional information about our Share Name ID service please visit our website at http://spr.ly/6608Go29K. Hello,
Thanks for posting this! The same thing almost happened to me last month. I received the same "account suspended call" which sounded authentic, complete with background music and the token phrases you hear while on hold. I stayed on the line until a "representative" came on and said that my account was suspended because of suspicious activity. Which was odd because I was just on another call so I knew my account wasn't suspended. Nevertheless I went along, all the while thinking something was strange . The "rep" then sent me a text message with a code so that I could "verify my account" . The text came from a number that I had received generic overage texts from Verizon in the past back in 2016. It all seemed very authentic... Except why was the phone rep trying to reset my website password? That's when I knew it was a scam! I started asking HIM questions and he hung up on me! I called Verizon via the # number and a real rep told me about the scam. She checked my account and made notes on it about the fraud attempt and told me to reset my password via my app like normal. Please be vigilant guys... This one almost got me. These crooks are getting smarter. I have been a vzw customer for 10+ years now with no problems... I am certain had I been more distracted that day with kids, or work I would have fallen for the scam. It was that close to being real.

AUG. 26, 2019 at 8:45 AM, Mountain time: I received a scam phone call with the caller ID displaying the phone number of one of my Verizon phones. I answered the call and a recording came on saying my Verizon account had been suspended and I should press "1" for more information. I hung up. What worries me is that some s**m bag has gotten hold of one of my Verizon phone numbers and is now using it to defraud people. The caller ID also displayed my full name.

I'm an IT profession and have been working in the field since the very early days of the Internet. I've experienced just about every Internet based scam and fraud attempt there is. This one almost caught me. It was very well executed. Verizion really should be paying attention here.
These are the points that bother me the most.
The source phone number of the call is not valid. It's spoofed. In one case it looked like it was a call from my phone number to my phone number. In the other case it appeared to be from Verizons 800 number.
The text messages for the account reset authorization code appear to be coming from numbers that I've received account reset texts from before.
Interestingly enough, the first incident occurred within hours of visiting a Verizon store requesting assistance with an iPhone issue. They referred me to Apple, but before referring me, they put the hard press on me to purchase a new phone which I did not need. I insisted it was not necessary and left, but not until they had accessed my account which required that I give them my account PIN. I was lerry of that, but gave it to them since I was in a Verizon store.
The fraud attempt occurred within 1 hour after that. If I had to guess I'd say that the network in the Verizon store we visited was compromised. I'll be conducting my business with Verizon on line from this point forward. It's safer.
Either way - if you get one of these - don't just reset your password. Reset your PIN too.

I received the same call from 1-800-200-7029. I figured it was a scam and hung up before it connected me to a person. Later in the evening I was telling my wife about it and wondered what would happen if I called the number. A recording of a woman’s voice came on and said “hey guys, hot women are waiting to talk to you right now”. Well that pretty much confirmed my suspicions.

Hey Verizon, how do people contact you if they don't have Twitter of Facebook? Your company / rep is assuming that everyone loves and uses FB etc. Not the case. I am most interested in how the scammers are able to use our own numbers to disguise their number. Also what is Verizon doing about. Probably nothing but I thought I would ask anyway. Thank you.

Sadly, that might be bad for business considering Verizon cannot even help customers via Verizon Community page.

Hello Cat1202! We know the importance of stopping these spam calls, and we would love to help in any way possible. Please keep in mind that we would never reach out to you, and ask for your personal information. We are currently working with the FCC to stop these, however, for the meantime, we recommend using our Call Filter app to help you identify spam calls. Here is more information: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/call-filter-faqs/
We hope this helps.

Just had same type call and very confusing becaused it looked like it was coming from my own phone number. I hung up immediatly and contacted Verizon via chat. They assured me my account was OK and recommended changing password and pin.
Fast response and glad I hung up.

I had the exact same thing. The call looks like it came from my own phone. I can’t even find it on the call log. They said that there was suspicious activity on my account And they were calling from the fraud department. I was told they would be sending me a text with a security code And to give it to them. I hung up that point

Highdessert, making sure you are only receiving phone calls that are meant for you is vital. You took the correct steps to take by releasing the phone call and not providing any personal information. My call came from 925 651 6564 said my account was suspended but offered to reconnect by pressing 1. I ended the call signed on to my verizon account and it is fie. Definately a scam attempt to re-direct the one time code to another phone number.

I would also be worried if I received a call reporting that my account was suspended. To be on the same page and provide the best resolution, tell us more. Did you get a chance to review your account online to make sure that everything is under control? Are you experiencing any problems with the service?

I just received a call from my own phone number stating my account has been suspended and to push 1 or 2.
