What will be the less expensive way to remain in touch?
they have an connect@sea program, but it seems you need to buy a base plan.
any way to just remain connected via text without running a data roaming tab and without getting callas?

If you put your phone into airplane mode and then turn on wifi only while in airplane mode, would only be charged for your internet plan you purchase thru the cruise ship. You should check out the internet packages available and the restrictions for such packages.
With your example of using Skype while onboard, you may want to rethink that as the following is listed on their website:
"Internet Packages are nonrefundable at the time of purchase. Please be advised that bandwidth-heavy applications such as Skype, YouTube, and MagicJack are not available."

I am going on a Bahamas cruise on Royal Caribbean ship Brilliance of the Seas. Is there a temporary plan addition that can be added for those days to be able to keep in touch with family & friends at home? Also how can I keep from incurring roaming charges? I use an iPhone 5S. Thank you, Pam

Hello PAMGRE70, hope you have a great time on this cruise! We always recommend using our International Trip Planner to find the international plan that best fits your needs to use your phone while visiting other countries. You can find it in the following link: http://spr.ly/66051ewY7. We don't have plans to cover you while out at sea, we recommend reaching out to the cruise company as they have their own plans available. The best thing to do to avoid roaming charges is to set your iPhone to Airplane Mode. You can do so by using the steps in the following link: http://spr.ly/66061ewYC. Does this help?
