I have a month-to-month (no longer on contract) plan with a LG cosmos phone. Can I change to a prepaid plan without buying a new phone?

We tried to do this today with both an Env3 and a Samsung Sway - the rep at the store said we'd have to get a new phone to move from contract plan to a pre-paid plan. This was at a corporate store too.
The LG Cosmo 2 does not work on the prepaid but the LG Extravert does, I have no idea what the difference is. It does not work with the Daily or the Monthly plans.
