.173 update & SIM card issue?

Hi -
After updating this morning (6.12.173) from VZW, I now cannot access my phone at all. I get a message that says "the sim card was recently removed, sign in to your account to verify identity', but the sim wasn't removed. Try to sign into my gmail (the only user name option offered), & it says "your username or password is incorrect. Please check them and try again". The password is correct.
The Motorola web site so far says the only solution is a factory reset. I really don't want to lose everything on my phone.
Has anyone else had this problem? And hopefully a solution so my phone doesn't remain just a pretty paperweight?
Thanks!

The issue was resolved by a nice man at the Verizon store. He actually
took the sim card out, twice (which I hadn't done, despite what my phone
said). At power up the pword screen was gone.

took the sim card out twice? Would you mind going into detail about this process? i mean did he remove , insert it, reboot, and repeat? did he do it twice in a row before rebooting? did he wait a minute or two before remocving it a second time? If this works, you'll be saving alot of people from headache

He was rather quick...but it looked like he took out the card..reinserted
and rebooted. Error message remained. He repeated the process & the second
time the main screen came up with no error. Hope that works for you!

It didn't work, but here's what I did:
First off, I have a launcher installed on my phone. I have go launcher and go locker. I used the ICS theme, which allows me to unlock, access the camera, text or call.
Somehow, after toying with it, I got the notifications bar to slide down after I selected the texting option on the unlock. At that point, I activated the smart actions menu. I set a new task, that whenever the screen turned on, it would launch golauncher.
My home button is ineffective, and if hitting back doesn't work, I just lock the phone, and turn on the screen again. This is all I need to simply wait it out till they fix this issue. I refuse to waste unnecessary time reinstalling everything, and restoring what is actually backed up because the pinheads who released this update failed to do their job.

I too have this problem. I called Verizon (on my house phone) and they said it is a Motorola problem and they will issue a patch to fix it. No clue as to when though. Lots of help there NOT. I am a little scared to hit the rest button as I do not want to lose all my info as well.

I just spoke to a Motorola Rep over this same issue, here is a transcript:
MaritesS: Hi, my name is MaritesS. How may I help you?
Brian: Hello, I just updated my razr with the .173 update this morning and it turned my phone into a paper weight, it says the sim card was recently removed and that i must enter my login info to verify my identity, i entered the correct
info and it doesn't work
Brian: I restarted the phone several times also
MaritesS: I'm sorry to hear about that but let me go ahead and assist you.
Brian: ok
MaritesS: Can I first have the serial number of your phone?
Brian: sure but I can not get passed that screen, it boots up and goes straight to that screen, I hit the home button and nothing happens
MaritesS: How about the box?
Brian: i have the box, which number is it exactly?
Brian: i see several bar codes
MaritesS: It starts with 990000.
Brian: o yes i see it
Brian: IMEI: ***************
MaritesS: Thank you.
Brian: you are welcome
MaritesS: First, try to power off and remove SIM, then reinsert SIM and power back on and let handset power on fully and register.
Brian: ok
Brian: so I power down, remove sim, then put it back in then power it up?
Brian: or power down, remove sim, power up, and reinsert sim
MaritesS: No, remove sim then reinsert it and power it back on.
Brian: ok thank you
MaritesS: No problem.
Brian: That did not work, it brought me back to to that screen
MaritesS: I'm sorry to hear about that.
MaritesS: Our last resort is a factory data reset.
Brian: I tried to log into Motoblur from the motorola website with the correct login info and that failed as well
MaritesS: Factory Data Reset is a tool used to remove everything that was imported, added or installed on the device. Keep in mind, when using
this feature; everything is deleted. Nothing stored on the MicroSD or the internal phone storage will be affected unless you choose to erase
it as well.
MaritesS: I understand. That's why you have to reset the phone.
Brian: I will lose all my contacts correct?
MaritesS: Yes.
Brian: and you are sure that will work, and there are no other options? will there be a fix for this anytime soon?
MaritesS: For now, that's our only work around.
Brian: Ok i am going to give it a try, thank you for your help today.
MaritesS: You're welcome, Brian.
MaritesS: If issue remains, please do contact us back.
MaritesS: If you need any more information get in touch. Thanks from Motorola, bye!
Brian: Thanks have a great day
MaritesS: Thank you.
MaritesS has disconnected.
I am going to hold off with the factory reset for as long as I can!

I also tried the removal of the sim card numerous times, unsecessful. I finally just caved and did the factory reset. Frustrating to say the least. Now I get to spend the evening putting my phone back to the way it was BEFORE the nasty update of this morning. Good luck

I wonder if we should retry the update after the factory reset, Ive read where people have installed it and it worked as intended, maybe it was just a few people who experienced this problem. Let me know if you elect to reinstall the update and what happens please.

I've also have this problem after the upgrade this morning, and tried several times to power down, take out the sim card, wait, put it back in and power up. No luck. The user/password login (though correct) doesn't work. I'm rather upset that the only other option to "reboot" is a factory reset...

boo ya!
ok if you can find a way to access your accounts settings like i was able to do, locate the account and you should notice that it wont let you log in. at this point, erase the account. add the account once more and log in. wait a minute or so and you should notice that the home button works once more. this is what i did and i have managed to bypass doing a reset on my phone.
thank you smart actions and thank you golauncher.

Ok, so just to let the community know (as a whole), I just did the update by going to "Settings" > "About Phone" > "System Updates". It alerted me to the update, and if I hadn't selected to download it, then it would accommodate me whether I wanted it or not.
After an uneventful download (without incident), it then informed me that it was actually downloaded (Download Complete) and that I could install it now, or it would be installed for me in one hour if I selected "Install Later". After selecting "Install Now", it did its thing. Once the install was complete, it stated that the update was successful.
Once completed I still had my exact same home screen with slide to unlock, and then the unlock pattern that I set as an added measure of security. After performing the unlock sequence, my home screen and wallpaper are still the same, the other screens are the same, all apps are still installed, texts are still there and in the same order, contacts are all there, it remembered and connected to my home wi-fi - basically, I can't even tell that an update was done - my phone is exactly the way it was before the update except for a refresh of the icons in "Settings", and it's telling me that there are app updates. There was no need to delete my account or to hard reset the phone - it just worked.
For some strange reason though, my wi-fi just now seemed to stop working. It does show that it's connected, but it's not turning blue (indicating that it's actually working) and web pages won't load, nor will the Android Market open, but this seemed to happen after I powered the phone down and powered it back up. I didn't HAVE to power down, but once the update had finished, I just felt to go ahead and do it. I'm going to just leave wi-fi off until I can call tech support.
This is all that I know for now. This was seemingly a rather large update/maintenance release and I'm sure there was more to it than I've discovered at this point, but it's late and I'll just have to look at it when I get up. The only other thing I might add is that the "Android Version" shows 2.3.6 (under Settings>About Phone) although I'm not sure if it was this version before the update or if it was 2.3.5.
I hope that this helps.

Ok, so I woke up and turned wi-fi back on and it connected with no problem at all. Web pages load as always, the Market loads and allows me to search, download, etc. I guess it was just a glitch. Again, I hope this helps. Maybe Motorola was able to resolve whatever issues are reported here and fixed them in the maintenance release (update) that I received.
While I'm sure that those who had problems after updating actually did have the problems reported, I can only say personally that it went through for me without any issues. I would make mention though, that I'm not really sure what this update was/is all about. I haven't found anything on Moto's website, nor on VZ's website about it so I'm not really sure what all this was/is about. The one thing I do hope is that it helps with extending the battery life a little. Great phone otherwise and I'm SSSOOOOOOOO glad I left AT&T!!

I managed to get my phone fixed when it had the same issue this afternoon by doing the following:
While the phone is showing the 'enter your password' screen press and hold the the power button for 2 seconds
When the 'Phone options' screen comes up select 'Airplane mode'
Turn off the phone and then back on again
When the phone boots back up it should allow you to see your main menu again but you won't have any wireless or data connection
Make a phone call
This will take the phone out of airplane mode and simultaneously start using your SIM card
The SIM card should re-sync during the call and after you've hung up you should be able to use your phone again
I hope this works for some of you too.

Rephadim, i am not sure how you figured that one out but your solution worked for me. Thanks. I was real close to resetting and am glad I was able to avoid it.

I'm with nightowl1016, Rephadim I don't know how you did it but your fix worked for me also. It took about 4 times but I seemed to get it to go after making a call to my other phone, answering it and leaving the connection open for 3 minutes thinking it was giving the SIM card enough time to re-synch during the connection. It worked well and I have had no issues in 2 complete days I just don't dare turn the phone off now. Thanks.

Yes, unfortunately, the solution is only good until you power off. I've had to go through the same process about a half dozen times so far but at least it works. Now, when I power off, I put my phone in Airplane mode beforehand. That way, when I power on, I just need to make a quick call to my voice mail before I can use my Razr. Hopefully, they will release a fix soon.
