I haven't been able to figure out what the 5 bars are for on the bottom of the home screen. One will be blue and the others gray. I can't click on them or drag to open them. The bar that is blue changes.
Any help?

These bars are linear and not one atop another, correct? then PJNC284 is absolutely correct. It indicates what screen you are currently one.

It shows you which Home Screen you are on. There are 5 Home screens that you can customize, and it shows you which one you are currently on.. Also, if you are on the middle one (default) of your Home Screens, if you hit the "Home" button, you shrink all 5 of the screens onto 1 screen, and then you can touch the one you want to go to.
