After Android update I can no longer connect to PC with USB

After the recent Android Update we can no longer connect to a PC via USB. Tried on several different PC's and two different Droids. I went to the local Verizon store and a tech there told me how to get the phone into developer mode and do some other convoluted things to get it connected. This appears to be a work around. Are there plans to fix this in the future?

Have you tried to reinstall the drivers on your computer for the phone?

Thanks for the response Kathy.

No I have not. Drivers on my Computer for the Phone. Hummmm. Not sure where even to go to do that. I’ll go back to the Forum and browse.

Thanks, Ed

OK – I connected the phone to my computer, went through the convoluted gyrations to get the phone to appear on my computer, then selected the phone in Device Manager and searched for updated drivers, and it came back and said the best driver was already installed.

Have you tried the other suggestion provided earlier?  Have you pulled down the phone's notification shade and changed the USB mode from charging to File Transfer?

I'm assuming your phone updated to the Marshmallow OS?  If so, the default USB mode is now charging only.  Once you connect the phone and computer via the USB cable, pull down the phone's notification shade, tap where it says USB Charging, and change it to File Transfer.

Thanks for the info, however, when I pull down the Notification Shade there is no USB icon.

I have had this Droid Turbo for several years, USB connectivity has worked until the latest update, early this year.

I am beginning to think it is a push to forces us to use the “Cloud” and as a result pay premiums for additional space.

It's not an icon, it's a notification.  See if this helps:

"Have you pulled down the phone's notification shade and changed the USB mode from charging to File Transfer?".

This worked for me. Thank you!

Thanks for the response.

I do not have a USB item in the notification area.

The latest update indicates my System Version to be –

24.81.5 quark_verizon.verizon.en.US

Unplug the phone and plug it back in again; try a different USB port; try a different USB cable.  Once the phone and computer are connected, you should see a notification as shown in the link in the earlier post.

Here’s what the guy at the Verizon store told me to do –

Go to Settings, “About Phone” -

Scroll down to “Build Number” and tap it 7 times – this puts the phone in Developer mode.

Now on the “Settings” menu there is a menu item {}Developer Options –

Tap that and scroll down to “Select USB Configuration, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) –

On this screen you see the options for configuring USB. There are 6 Options. He had me select MTP, and it works.

However, even though the bullet next to MTP, I have to select this option every time I want to transfer files between Phone and PC.

The VzW rep gave you an alternative approach that isn't really necessary if you pull down the notification shade once you connect the phone and computer.  As noted earlier, with the Marshmallow update, the default USB mode is charging only so yes, each time you connect the phone and computer with the USB cable, you'll need to change the USB mode from charging to file transfer.

I was not seeing USB in the notification window. I have a gazillion items in there and apparently when you plug the phone in it becomes the second item on the bottom on my phone. Guess I wasn’t scrolling down far enough. Sure enough there it is.

Thanks, Ed
