Bluetooth Issue with Droid Razr Maxx

I have had my Razr Maxx for about 3 weeks. From the jump I have had problems playing music thru several bluetooth devices. It will play fine for a few minutes, then music will start stuttering(dropping in and out) and continue to do so. Music plays fine when playing thru the phone speaker or wired headphones, but fails when using bluetooth.  I called in, and they sent me another phone, and the same problem is occurring with the new one. I'm figuring its a software issue, bc I had no problems with my Droid X. Is anyone else having this problem?? I probably listen to music just as much as I talk on the phone and this is def. frustrating.

If you are trying to play music, make sure your devices support the A2DP profile.

Having said that, I have noticed that when Bluetooth and wifi are both enabled, sometimes there is the stuttering you describe.  I haven't had it lately (maybe after the update?) but if I turned off wifi it went away.

I read about the wi-fi possibly causing problems and have tried turning it off to see if it helps, but it doesn't. I'm experiencing the problems with 3 vehicle radios and a pair of motorola BT headphones...it also doesn't matter if its the stock music player or a different one.

hmmm.  That's what I would do too.  Have you tried Safe Mode to see if it does it then?  If so, then I guess I'd call Verizon.  They're probably going to want to try a reset though so I'd back up my data first.

Hi Everyone

I posted a fix to this on another site. It works as a patch only - The higher ups still need to fix the real issue when the next update rolls out, but here goes

Hi guys. I had posted something to this in the D*&^%4 forum. My Droid X was great with playing bluetooth music to my Clarion head unit in my truck. Fast forward to my Razr MAXX and nothing but constant skipping. It's the Data Connection in 3G arenas. In a 4G area you get flawless audio with no problems. In 3G areas, the skipping was so annoying that i almost took my phone back. What i did was open Smart Actions : Add a new Rule (the + sign in the upper right corner) : Start from Scratch : Triggers - BLuetooth Device (in my case it is a CX501) : ACTIONS - Cellular Data DISABLE. This will stop your 3G skipping and still let you receive Calls, send calls, receive text message and send text messages.

The only problem with doing this BANDAID patch is that you cannot use any celular data transfer so if you were listening to music thru your head unit in you car, you wouldn't be able to use the Navigation or maps. For me this isnt a deal breaker because i stream bluetooth while driving 1/2 hour to work. I don't need to use navigation and really shouldn't be surfing the internet while driving to work Smiley Happy. Like i stated before, this is only a temp fix and needs to be addressed with the next ICS rollout.

Let me know if this works for you guys as well. I am currently RAZRless due to the fact that my screen is cracked in several places. Thank God i purchased the Assurion insurance. I am without phone for 2 days and out 100 smackers but its better than buying a brand new phone for a whole lot more.

I just got a Razr Maxx. I upgraded(?) from an Droid Incredible 2 (a great phone!).

I am having the choppy/stutter bluetooth problem in my car. I use a Blackberry Bluetooth Gateway connected to the Aux jack in the ARM rest of my car. This solution has worked flawlessly for me for over a year with my Dinc 2. I am also noticing that the bluetooth connection is getting disrupted when paired to my car for voice calls (message flashes on screen).

Don't have any problems streaming the Maxx to my Jambox @ home or my BlueAnt headset when at work. Problem seems to only occur while I am moving in my car. I tried CornyJoe's Smart Action hack (disable Cellular Data) hoping this would resolve the problem. WiFi was also off. However it was not successful.

While testing on my way into work I put the Maxx in Airplane mode and activated the bluetooth to stream music. It worked with no choppiness or stutter for 20 minutes of my commute. This did not occur on multiple trips on the same route over the past week when in regular operational mode.. Thus, the problem seems to be with the 3G/4G radios.

I hope this issue gets resolved by VZW or Moto. This is my first Moto device. I have been a happy HTC user for the past 3 years Dinc 1 & Dinc 2 and have never experienced any bluetooth related issues. I wanted to hold out for the Dinc 4g, but wanted to upgrade before VZW could take away my unlimited data plan.

Aside from this bluetooth issue and a few other minor issues (blur v. sense, feel of device in hand) I really like the Maxx. The battery life is tremendous and a feature that trumps all other gripes (except this bluetooth problem) I have with the device.

Moto is supposed to have the best radios in the business. I really hope they get this bluetooth issue worked out. It really takes away from my enjoyment of the device as my phone is my main source of media in the car (Slacker, Amazon Music, Beyond Pod, etc.). With the big battery and bluetooth and should be able to play media in my car without wires all over the place.

It could be the Way bluetooth is set up in the Motorola's Compared to the H.T.C's that's Causing the issue. Do you have an AUX port in your Car to were you can use. See how that Works i tried using this in our New 2011 Chevy Truck as it doesn't have Bluetooth Capability in it and the Music i was streaming thru that sounded Really Good And one Reminder Streaming this Way is a We bit smarter anyway because the Blue Radio is off and is not pulling down on the Maxx's battery .  I got the Aux Cable with the Razr Maxx Car Dock..

I can use the Aux jack, but it is located in my arm rest. I connect the Blackberry Bluetooth Gateway to the Aux jack in my arm rest and all is hidden and out of the way. No wires all over the car.

I am not overly concerned about the bluetooth drain on the battery since I can charge the Maxx nightly. I use a ProClip to mount the Maxx to the center console of my car. I like having no wires to worry about when I get in and want to go. If I am going on a long trip (+1 hour) then I'll plug the phone in to keep it juiced.

We really shouldn't be having the conversation. Moto and VZW should have these bugs worked out. Bluetooth is not a new technology and other vendors seem to make it work without issue.

True!  Well to add sometimes on these little Dudes getting them to hook up Correctly should be as easy as eating Ice Cream Cone!  But what happens if you don't eat it Correctly you Get it all over Ya an it Sticky once it's on ya..kind of the Same thing with these phone's there's a way it hooks an it Works as it Should but finding the correct way too hook it up is as said like eating a Ice Cream Come. Complicated But not Complicated!

This may be a problem with the Bluetooth implementation in 4g devices. Seems like the Bionic has similar problems.

I'm having a similar issue with my bluetooth not having a reliable connection when sync'd to my BMW's built in Bluetooth system. I recently switched to Verizon & previously had another Motorola phone with AT&T, the Atrix 4g & it never dropped the Bluetooth sync with my car when on a call. This morning, I lost sync at least 3 times on my 33 mile commute which is about 45-60 minutes in Houston traffic. Do any of you have cases on your phone that are having issues? I doubt my Otterbox is causing issues as I have one on my Atrix as well & it performed fine.

To the OP, do you sync your phone to a hands free car system for calls by chance? Are you experiencing any issues with that as well? If so, it could be the Bluetooth radio in this model phone that is the issue.

I personally haven't had any issues with staying connected once I do connect, my problem was just the choppy music, which has been temporarily fixed with the solution CornyJoe gave. U can possibly try that to see wheather or not the 3G problem is causing it to drop connection.

What i did was open Smart Actions : Add a new Rule (the + sign in the upper right corner) : Start from Scratch : Triggers - BLuetooth Device (in my case it is a CX501) : ACTIONS - Cellular Data DISABLE. This will stop your 3G skipping and still let you receive Calls, send calls, receive text message and send text messages

I'm in Houston & have yet to see it go into 3g mode, it's always in 4gLTE. I'm not too keen in disabling my data connection either as I need to be able to get meeting invites & cancelations via email.

I'm hoping it's a software issue & not something to do with the Bluetooth radio. I may at least give it a try however to see if I can isolate the data connection as being the culprit to the dropped BT sync.

Hey Marc - Not to flood the thread with replies tonight, but I wanted to let you know this has nothing to do with the case.  I pulled off my case to see if it was the problem (otterbox, btw) and it had no effect.

Our only recourse is a software update, I HOPE.

I can confirm the same issue in the 3G arena.  Bluetooth is randomly choppy and extremely ANNOYING.  Once I'm back under 4G or at home on wifi, no problems.  The only way to resolve the issue is turning off Cellular Data when you're in 3G coverage.  Thanks to CornyJoe for the Smart Actions "tip".

VW needs to fix this on the next roll-out!!!
