My Droid Razr Maxx which I have had for roughly 6 months lost the ability to send messages or make calls early this morning. It happened all of a sudden too. I still have a signal and can make connections to my wi-fi as well (Don't think that matters). I have performed numerous soft resets and would really like to avoid having to do a hard reset of the device.
There could be an outage in your area.
You also could try powering off the phone, removing the SIM card, waiting a minute or so, reinserting the SIM card, then powering the phone back on (sometimes resetting the SIM card helps).
