Droid Razr/Razr Maxx Data Limit Issues After 4.0.4 (ICS)

Hello all,

     This is for Ice Cream Sandwich Razrs or Razr Maxx.  Today my Droid Razr decided to cut-off my data in the form of a notification indicating I have reached my limit and need to either 1. Re-Enable data or 2. accept (ok button).  Problem was, re-enabling would not re-enable my data. I would lose 4G and revert to (sorry to say) sloooow 3G or lose both indicators altogether. I could connect to my home wi-fi but I pay for unlimited data and don't want to use up my home internet bandwidth (5+ devices hooked up to it).  Needless to say, I was concerned and called our friends at VZW.  The first time I went through their typical troubleshooting of powering my Razr off while they refresh my data. It worked for about 15 minutes and called back.  I knew it wouldn't fix it as it was the OS, not the network for once (4G is awful in my area).  They tried their best but this time had to get me over to Motorola as it was an OS issue. Motorola placed me on hold twice before they got me to a second-tier (I'm guessing) tech support agent.  As always, right away they want me to perform a factory reset!  Take it from me, folks anytime a support agent wants to wipe your phone is because they gave up.  A factory reset should only be acceptable if you the tech agent has performed at least 20 troubleshooting steps including safe mode and having you delete and re-download every app to see what is causing the problem.

    While on the phone with this "tech expert" I decided to do what any responsible consumer should do and Google my issue. I found the answer in a blog that resolved my issue with no need to factory reset (memory wipe) my phone. I hung up on that genius and my device is now running my data as much as it can due to my spotty area!

    If any of you are having this issue what you need to do is go to your settings>data usage> check on Set Mobile Data Limit> tap on the graph and the red bar should now be able to move as well as the "warning" bar.  Simply set it to a level you will not possibly hit (I put it to an obscene amount of 50GB) so this no longer happens.  It's strange that having the Set Mobile Data Limit unchecked would cause this issue but it does.

    I hope this helps as I want to ensure you all don't go through the runaround with Verizon Tech Support or Motorola as you can find better answers online.  I also want to save your place on Angry Birds or any other apps that require time.

I checked my data usage and was really surprised at what ate up data. Several OS systems were chewing on it, my Alarm clock (which I do use), and several other items which you would think never ate any data. Granted, none of these were huge bites, mainly kilobytes. My biggest hog was, of course, the Play Store (Market), and following a close second, the browser. It was quite an eye opener to see where the data went.

It can go Quicker that expected Mortb i was Shocked too!  but i'v seemed to have maintained mine to under 2Gigs and it has't had any i'll effects that may change if i Go over but i think i help mine in some ways by changing the Dates i'm going by my bill Cycle Date..

Another thing one's can do is set there cycle dates on there phone to follow the cycle dates on your plan like your plan cycles every 26 set it for 27 of the Month and it will cycle on the 26 giving a new 2 GB of space. This is one of the Things i set on my Maxx..

I've been driven nuts with this for the last 3 days... I just figured I was being throttled since I used about 4GB in a week. Smiley Happy
