Moto Z Droid Battery Issue

I have a Moto Z phone that worked great up until a couple of months ago when all of a sudden the battery started draining at an alarming pace. Also it sometimes just shuts off and it locks up frequently. My husband got his Moto Z at the same time and his is not acting up at all leaving me to believe it is something wrong with my particular phone. Also it is intermittent as to how fast it drains and appears to be random when it chooses to shut down... sometimes when it reads as much as 50% battery left. Help! I just got this phone paid off and should not need another $750 phone so soon.

I feel your pain.  I've had the Moto Z for only 1.5 years.  Didn't have any issues until about 2 months ago when my battery started draining for no reason - even when it was idle.  I didn't add any apps.  I always use the Motorola turbo charger.  The phone wasn't dropped and did not get wet...it doesn't have a scratch on it.  It really doesn't get a lot of use as I also have a work phone.  I've done everything on this thread and more....tried to re-calibrate the battery as recommended online and also tried to restore/reboot/recover, remove all apps, shut off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings that can drain the battery ....you name it.  Apparently, this is a major problem as even the cell phone repair stores won't even try to replace the battery...but they will with almost all the other Motorolas.  I've had good luck with Motorola's over the years but this one is a dud. Initially, it would completely shut off around 20%...then it was 40%...then 70%.  As I post this message on my laptop, it dropped from 100% to 80% in 5 min without any use at all.  Within 15 min. of being idle, battery was completely dead....so disappointing and so much wasted money.  With Verizons increasing rates, I can't afford a new phone as I already have 4 phones on my family plan.  I just keep it plugged in now for occasional use.  Thankfully, I can use my work cell phone when I'm out.  They should discontinue this model.

I wish people could actually comprehend what is being said so they don't ask stupid questions. Two different people have ALREADY stated the battery life is random!  Do you understand random? It means never the same amount. Also the battery is dying when it registers (in my son's case) up to 70% remaining.

I have same issue. 60% + shown on display and phone shuts down. Are you offering a discount on replacing battery?

BAF80, we are sorry to hear that you are experiencing these random battery issues and do want to get to the bottom of this. As each device is a bit different, we appreciate any help in getting to the bottom of what is causing this issue on your phone. Do you recall adding any new apps, games or software when this began? Has there been any physical or liquid damage to the phone? Are you using any specific app when this happens? Is there any damage to the charger or charging port?

I have two Moto Z force droid doing the same thing we've tried the soft factory reset and the hard reset and battery will say 80 % or 100 or some charge level and BOOM it's died or if it off and fully charged 100 % when it boots the battery is 10 % or less and shuts down

It's horrible you pay all this money for phones and services and the phone goes out of warrenty and you either have to pay for a new phone or cancel services

I apologize for the hassle this has caused as I know how important it is to be able to rely on your phone throughout the day. We want to help you stay! Did this seem to start after installing any new apps or updates? Are the applications up to date in the Play Store on each device? When reviewing the battery statistics in Settings> Battery, what are the main applications and processes consuming the battery?    - YaleK_VZW

Hi. Unfortunately, I appear to be having the same problem that you are having with my Verizon andorid phone. It is a Moto Z Droid on Android version 8.0.0. It seemed to be operating ok until a few months back.

It shuts down randomly even when screen display shows battery percentage 40% or greater.

Like some other users that have noted this problem or similar on various forums, it often appears that the phone shuts itself down even though the battery setting shows battery power remaining and low usage from the apps. I have tried several of the suggested tips for resolving the issue... I have checked the storage & usage of the apps on the phone, but none seem to be using more than 15%. I cleared the cache of my most used apps & also wiped the phone cache, but the issue still seems to exist.

It appears consistent that the battery power indicated is NOT the same as indicated when the phone is powered up or charging. On the charger it will display 100%, but once off the charger, it seems to die within an hour or so, without much usage of the phone.

I’ve also uninstalled & disabled several of the apps on my phone, but the random shut down issue is still happening with the phone, so no luck...

SELAHJRIC,

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We absolutely want you to be able to use your phone without having to worry about when it will run out of battery. Help is here. When it drains fast/shuts down, are you doing anything specific (texting, browsing the web, etc)? Does this happen on Wi-Fi or does it happen on LTE? Does this happen everywhere you go? We ask that because a huge tax on battery resources is when your phone is experiencing low signal and constantly searching for a better connection. Please let us know details so we can better assist.

So what's the fix, if I didn't have the charger mod I would be asking for a new phone or leave Verizon and I have been with them since the 90's , they used to have really great technical support but now it's just people reading from a manual and have no hands on experience and want to tell you a master reset fixes everything and it doesn't

I am sure Motorola has done this as an intentional update to cause us to buy new phones. A call to Motorola is a waste of time. They want to charge you to work on it. Illegal business practices in my opinion. So many phones acting like this after their update is no coincidence!

JosephT_VZW,

Thank you for following up on my concern. I am on WiFi & LTE. And have been using the phone with those since I got the phone. But the phone dying prematurely didn't use to happen.

I've been monitoring the phone dying again for the last week and it appears to happen at any random time (on web, opening photos, trying to take a photo, etc).

Thank you anyway but the phone ended up dying and I had to get a new one.

SELAHJRIC, I appreciate the follow-up details that you have provided. Besides the aforementioned changes you have described, have you made any other recent changes to your phone? Please complete a device health check and share the results: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-206364/ This will provide us with useful diagnostic information about your phone. Looking forward to hearing back.

Everything! I was told by chat I just need to upgrade. How is there not a fix? It's obvious others have the same issue.  I have done all the troubleshooting, factory reset, health check, and more! It drains drastically and has random shutdowns.

The solution is simple: change out the battery for a new one. It is reasonably easy. I did mine in about 20 minutes. Back to normal.

RichR49  said, "The solution is simple: change out the battery for a new one. It is reasonably easy. I did mine in about 20 minutes. Back to normal." Do you know where I can buy a new battery and where I can find instructions to open the phone and install the new battery? I had assumed, since it's a non-replaceable battery, that I couldn't do that.
