My Droid RAZR keeps dying fast

My RAZR keeps dying soo fast. It can go in as little as an hour. This is my second replacement for this same problem. My wife and I have the same phone and she has no issues with battery life. I have reset this phone to manufacture to wipe any apps that I may have that are draining and only installed apps that I had before I started having problems. Most times still the phone just dies really fast. And it gets warm to hot. I cant imagine with 3 different phones that it is a phone defect. I use LTE OnOff to keep my phone from trying to find 4G all the time. I do not have it where I live yet. Anyone have any ideas that may fix my battery problem? I am thinking of swapping my phone and my wifes to see if it does it to her.

The DROID Razr has a non-removable battery,

To the OP, I think it is possible to send the phone to Motorola for a battery replacement service. You would be without a phone during that time unless you had another phone you can use.

All of the phones are going that way. The new HTC's are non removable batteries, the new Mrotola's, Samsungs. They can all also be replaced by sending the phone back to the Manufacturer. Motorola charges in teh neighborhood of $45.00 to replace the battery.

I know how important it is to get the most out of your battery TheMudPeople! Here are some great tips to prolong battery life. Please keep in mind if your location may also affect battery life. If you are using your service mostly indoors at your home and work locations, signal strength may not be at optimum levels. Lower signal strength will use more battery.

In addition, we recommend you power cycle the devices at least once a day. Take a look here for more info!

I just started having this problem 3 days ago and don't know why. In the summer I use the phone a lot, 3000-4000 minutes a month or 120 minutes a day. It would last all day without a charge. Winter time I don't use it much so there is no reason it should be dying.

Today I took it off the charger around 9am, have made 3 or 4 calls maybe, went to use it at 4:30 and noticed it was off. The battery is dead. What gives? I also notice the phone would get hot and pretty sure it's related.

I haven't downloaded any new apps in over a few months, can't be that. I haven't changed anything, all else with the settings have remained the same yet now I am lucky to get a few hours out of it on standby?

Any advice?

Hi LB09!

I'm sorry to learn of any issues with battery life on your device. Were you able to check out the link provided in the previous post? What were the results? Also, do you notice any pattern with this? For example, have any applications been downloaded right before this started? Do you have any task killer applications downloaded? If do, please uninstall them and then monitor the device. Please let me know the results.

Thanks,

Hi,

Were you able to check out the link provided in the previous post? What

were the results?

I didn't see a previous email with a link about this problem, no results.

Also, do you notice any pattern with this? For example, have any

applications been downloaded right before this started?

No, in fact no additional programs have been downloaded nor used. Have been

using the phone as normal.

Do you have any task killer applications downloaded? If do, please

uninstall them and then monitor the device. Please let me know the results.

No, no task killers. I looked at what was draining the battery and biggest

culprit was display. The screen is set to go off after a few seconds of

inactivity and is set to automatic dimming as normal.

I don't know but the last week it has been ok some days and other days

would drain quickly. The times it would drain quickly I also notice it to

get very "warm" as well but nothing out of the norm with regards to usage

or applications used.

Please advise as I will be ramping up my talk times soon and know it wont

last more than a few hours in the day. I purposely bought it because of the

extended battery life, number one reason. I am concerned it can't be

removed nor can I be without a phone as I use it for my income.

Thanks

Mine just started dying too. I believe its got something to do with the last system update as mine was fine until I installed that.

Dear Razr11,

Good afternoon. I am sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with the battery life on your phone. I checked to see if this was a known issue after the software update. I was able to verify this is not a known issue.

There are many factors that can cause your battery to drain very quickly. If you are consistently streaming data such as, pandora, iheart radio, videos, movies, etc., this can cause your battery to drain quickly. Also if you are on voice calls for a long period of time or have bluetooth on consistently, this will cause your battery to drain quickly.

Can you also try running your phone on safe mode. http://vz.to/W6Ax37 This will help to ensure there is not an application that may be causing your battery to drain quickly.

We appreciate you taking the time to contact us. Should you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.

Thank You,

The system update enabled 4G again. My battery usage also showed screen as the main user, still does but I turned off 4G and its back to normal. I can go a couple days without recharging.

Download LTE On/Off from the Play store (it works even though it was its for HTC Thunderbolt) and follow the instructions. In theory you should be able to do this from the Data Usage part of settings (like you used to) but the new update has buried it somewhere else. So, download the app. Done.

I'd try this as step one.

Mine has been doing the same thing lately. I just realized after reading through this thread that it only started doing this after I set it to automatic screen brightness. I'm going to change it to static half brightness to see if that corrects it with a 30 second timeout. I'll keep you all posted.

I am having the same problem. I pretty much have to charge my phone 3 times a day now. It is getting ridiculous. It's not even a year old yet. And since you can't replace the battery. Am I supposed to keep this one until I am due for an upgrade?

In my case the screen is taking the bulk of the battery. The screen doesn't turn on any more than normal, goes off after a few seconds of idle and is set to automatic not bright. I also followed all the level 1 steps in the link above; all are common sense items and already eliminated as a source of the battery drain.

I went by a VZW dealer today, he has heard of this issue as well. He also suggested power cycling the phone periodically as mentioned in here. Something else he suggested was to turn the internet off and that when the phone searches for a signal it drains the battery moreso then when signal is good. OK, I can buy that and makes sense, however nothing is out of the norm on my end. I do notice a lack of reception in my house, or when it is in my jacket pocket, and that could be it. I also have noticed many times the phone would read 4G but instead of blue signal strength and blue 4G icon it's all white indicating no data service available. Maybe the phone is searching for data connections when none exist and causing the phone to overheat, drain the battery, while searching for the data signal.

This seems plausible, I guess it could be network related just as much as the handset. Nothing has changed on the handset side and pretty sure VZW is constantly making changes to the network. All I know is the problem continues and being on an unlimited cell plan with the high capacity razr maxx it's currently not cutting it and hope it gets resolved. With the plethora of $50 pre-paid unlimited plans available now (for what I give vzw $150+/mo) it's not making much sense to pay for these services when I could get the same for $1200 less a year. The ETF is what, one months service? Bottom line I need a phone that will last a day and use many minutes per month. I don't mind paying for it and the battery was reason numero uno I bought this handset, my income depends on it. When that isn't there, well, there is no point in paying for something I am no longer getting.

Please fix this VZW, if not competition will compel me to jump ship. Thanks

I think we are missing something here diagnosing the problem..............

Nothing has changed with regard to how the handset is being used. The battery life is significantly less, maybe 2/3 less, from the previous 10 or 11 months I have owned it. It could sit idle, make maybe 30 minutes of calls and 10 texts, and be completely drained in less than 6 hours................ standby time should be and was 380 hours. Summer I use 140 minutes a day and it would carry me until 5PM, there is no way it last beyond 60 minutes of talk time now.

To answer the questions; no I don't game on it and rarely use it to browse. I use it to make phone calls first, text second and this makes up 90% of all usage. I understand the screen is big and takes a lot of power, I get it. As mentioned the phone sits idle most of the time this time of year, the display only comes on when in use and quickly goes out after inactivity. When the screen is on it is set to automatic dim, it is not bright.

Nothing has changed with how I use the phone to drain the battery quicker. No apps have been recently downloaded. No settings on the handset have changed. It's either an issue with the handset or an issue with the network causing it, not the result of suddenly using it differently.

if you have very poor reception in your house it will drain fairly quick. there's nothing worse on a battery than struggling to hold a signal. also, with a 1750 battery, i would say 2-3 hours of screen on time is about all you will get. since you can't get an extended battery or replace this battery on this model, you are stuck just trying to do what you can to increase the life of your current battery. some of these things you can do is turn off location services until you need to use them. set screen to 30-40% unless you HAVE TO set it higher at times. turn wifi on whenever there's a strong wifi signal (for example, my home wifi network is much easier for my phone to hold than the cellular network). limit email (i have mine set to only check/pull every hour. "push" email will drain it worse). limit notifications, etc, etc.
