My phone is SO slow

My Droid Razr Maxx has been acting so slow the last few months.

I have been doing the following:

  • Wiping the cache partition daily
  • Deleting all text messages each day
  • I have factory reset my phone 3 times in the last 2 months
  • Deleted all photos once they have been uploaded (which I do every few days)

Even with all of that, my phone runs at the pace of snails.  Apps freeze almost every time they are being used, text messages take 20+ minutes to get to my phone even though I'm in 4G network, and everything takes forever to open.

Any suggestions??  I would like to not have to maintain my phone as much as I am.  Every blackberry I had worked better than this stupid phone.

Hi xxrtagxx!

I want you to love your device! Let's figure this out! Thanks for trying all you have done already. Please remove any task killer applications from the device. Please also put the device in safe mode by following these steps:

Safe mode helps us determine if an application is causing this to occur.

Thanks!

My phone is currently in safe mode.  How am I supposed to be able to determine which apps are causing the problem?

Do you have any custom launchers or lock screens. The MAXX should be able to handle them but in my experience they will cause problems. Also just go into your running services. RAM is a big part of phone performance and if you have tons of apps killing your 2GB of RAM, I would force stop some of them and see if it increases performance.

Xxrtagxx, this is a great question! While the phone is in safe mode it temporarily disables all app that have been installed via Google Play. This is determine wheather a third-party app is the cause of an operating system/app issue. If the issue fials to occur, the cause has been isolated to a third-party app and all recently installed/updated apps should then be uninstalled. Then with Safe Mode disabled, reinstall the apps and then test each app, ONE at a time, to identify which is causing the problems. This is a little bit of a longer process but it's been very helpful. Let me know if you need further help.

Thanks,

Hi, I have a razr model xt912 that I recently had to reactivate because I dropped my LGG2 & cannot afford the deductible to replace it right now. Anyway, when I turned on this phone and did all the updates I couldn't believe how slow it was. Or is, rather. I can barely use it. I contacted customer service immediately after clearing all of the media, texts, files, cache, etc, didn't work to help the issue and they told me to reset it in factory mode. So that's what I did. I got the few apps that I use on a daily basis like Evernote and waze and fb messenger. That's pretty much it besides using the calendar, gmail and chrome for the browser. This phone is unbelievably useless if we can't use the apps that are meant to be a part of the updated technology. I've done everything listed on the forums. My phone is my calendar and my email as well as my text/phone

So I need all of these things to work especially considering how much it costs every month. Is there ANYTHING I can do? I want to replace my LG but my upgrade isn't until December 2015. I cannot afford to buy a phone at full price so I need to wait for the upgrade and so I am feeling a bit stuck. I at least need to be able to answer a call when it comes in instead of having it freeze when I try to press the receive button. Thanks in advance.

Good morning Jacquelynn32! I understand the importance of ensurig you have a reliable working phone. I am sorry to hear you recently dropped your LG G2. Allow us to get to the bottom of your equipment concerns. I understand you currently have the XT912 activated on your account and have recently done a factory reset. Can you try running your phone on safe mode? To learn how to run your phone on safe mode click, http://vz.to/1v2kg4J this will help determine if one of the third party applications installed on the device is making the device run very slow. Please keep us updated after running your phone on safe mode a couple days.

Thank You,

This is what I would do, before you restart in safe mode, take screenshots of your apps running and how much RAM they use from your APPS under SETTINGS, chances are the ones using the most RAM are the ones causing slow downs. Make sure these are apps you downloaded and not native Android apps that are necessary for Android to run properly. When you restart in safe mode, compare the two and see which apps are killing your system and see if you can't live without those apps.

I use "Clean Master" from the play store, to clean up legacy APKs, private history, junk files and temp files. it's free and does a very good job of restoring performance.

did disabling the Facebook app work? I wondered if that and messenger had anything to do with it.

I struggled with this for months this year. I cleared the cache on apps. I put the phone in safe mode. I did 2 factory resets. I cleared the system cache. I did anything anyone suggested on any forum I could find. My phone could take 30 seconds to forever to open an app on a pretty regular basis. It responded so slow I often couldn't answer a call before it would go to voice mail. When I would try to take a picture it would take forever to load up the camera.

I started to notice a pattern. Whenever I cleared the cache on the facebook app things ran really fast for a while. So, I disabled the facebook app. Viola!! Life is good. The phone is back to normal. This did start after a system update so I always suspected it. But it appears that it is the combination of the update and the way the facebook app works (or doesn't work) with it. It is a pretty simple thing to try.

Settings - Manage Apps - Select the ALL group. Find Facebook. Select it and turn off notifications and then disable it. It will go to the bottom of your apps list after you do this. If this helps I would like to know. If it doesn't you can simply enable it again.

I went from wanting to smash a phone that I really liked to liking the phone again.
