In the mornings I need to press the start button and the volume button to get the phone to power up. Is the normal? I'm considering taking it back today.

No actually a long press on the power button wakes the phone. (starts the phone up) you did try that right?
pressing the power button and the vol up/down buttons together is how you enter your system menu.
Try just holding the power button write back and tell me if it worked.
