I just purchased a RAZR 16GB. When I query the storage settings it says I have:
Application storage
2.39 GB Available space
Internal storage
8.00 GB Total space
3.76 GB available space.
What happened to the 16GB?

Hi-I saw your post and had to register to respond to you as i have just gone through the same thing. I just purchased my first smartphone ever last week (got one for the wife too). I chose two 16 GB droid razrs. When unboxing and going through the manual Friday night, I saw lots of references to inserting the micro SD card. My phones did not come with microSD cards so I called Verizon. The rep had to go and check and then came back and said that the full 16GB is already installed on the hard drive. i said "fine" and left it at that. Well, fast forward to Saturday night and I’m messing around with the phones and see that like you, I had 2.36 something GB for applications, 8 GB total space, and 7.93 available (why is yours only 3 something, have you already added a bunch of apps, music and photos?). So, I tried to call Verizon. Could not get through, every phone number I had went into Verizon financial services vm. Same thing happened all day Sunday. This morning (Monday) I got through, explained everything to the rep, and she eventually understood where I was coming from after putting me on hold for a real long time, but said she did not have an answer for me and patched me through a Motorola rep. The rep explained that, the phone is 16GB but 4 are used for the preloaded apps, and another 4 are used for memory/ram. I said, well why doesn't it say total space-16GB, and available 8GB?. He agreed that it should be like that and didn't know why the display is like that, but added that I wasn't the first person to call and ask the question.
Oh-before talking to Motorola, Verizon said, "sir, in the fine print, it states the actual storage space may be less." I said I understood that but that most people would probably think that if the phone is advertised at 16 GB, that the actual available space would be something like 12-14GB, not HALF of what is advertised.
..hope this helps you.

Thanks. That really sheds light on the answer. I too got the same run-around. In regard to my available space, I daragged and dropped about 4GB of music onto the RAZR.

The device DOES have 16Gb of internal space. Formatted you will have around 14.xGb. What you don't see is reserved and it belongs to the OS for future updates.
If you are familiar with ADB you can check the partitions and you count 14.xGb.

Agree. I expected that, but didn't expect 4GB reserved for RAM and 4 GB
reserved for APPAS

4Gb is NOT reserved for RAM. I don't know who told you that but it isn't. I think the rep who helped you is just as confused as you are(not all reps have even touched an Android device).

4GB is onboard... The OS and system apps take up that space. This space is not accessable by the end user.
4gb + 8gb + 2.x user storage = 14.x

Found this post: Makes most sense.
"There is a total of 16GB of internal memory eMMC, but it's partitioned into different sections (like a hard drive).
"3.54 GB is for application storage, another 3.54 GB is (hidden) for phone use, which leaves 8GB "Internal Storage" available for music, pics, videos, etc.
"I do agree that saying it has "16 GB of internal memory" can be misleading and makes it sound like you can copy 16GB of files from your PC to the phone's internal memory, when in fact you only have access to 8GB. So in fact you are getting 16GB on the microSD card + 8GB internal storage.
This is why I wish companies (Verizon, Motorola, HTC, etc) would list the REAL internal storage amounts, as it always gets people upset after the phone is released.". AMEN!!!

So many talked bad about the poor Thunderbolt but if you think about it, this is still the only device with 40 Gigs... 8Gig Internal + 32 SD Card...
After using the TB I cant see myself going to a device with smaller storage because some report issues of low storage and I haven't seen this once on the TB.

But why would you need so much memory on a phone? Move some data off the phone onto a computer.

I work IT and project development and I store work presentations that can get pretty large, also system Macros and standard networking and system drivers for systems I service regularly...
Not to exclude my occasional video or two and music that keeps me going for those over night system upgrades... My TB saves me a headache of remembering backup storage drives and USB cards..
Me and my TB put in some work...

This is the drivel I got from Verizon:
Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless. We greatly value your business and we are committed to provide you the best customer service possible.
We apologize about the information you may have received regarding the available memory in your Droid Razr. When the information for the phone is advertise, the advertising information goes into detail about the hardware of the phone. The phone does have 16GB of internal space. Motorola's website and our website does specific that the formatted value of the memory will be less depending on applications and operating system files. This is the basic method that is used by all of the phone manufactures, Including the Apple iPhone, that advertise the total amount of memory. Even computer manufactures sell computers on the total capacity of the hard drive, not what is available.
As for the applications on the phone, I do agree with you that we should be able to remove the unwanted applications from the phone. Unfortunately the phones are programmed so they can not be removed.
Most questions regarding your device can be answered by visiting us at http://www.verizonwireless.com/support. Simply sign in or register for additional account information.
I hope that this information is helpful to you. However if you need additional assistance, please reply to this email with a daytime number to reach you. You can also give us a call at 800-922-0204 and press option 3 for technical support. You will want to make sure that you are calling from a separate line and that your device is available so that we can assist you further. We appreciate your business and thank you for using Verizon Wireless products and services.

Well I do understand your point but basically the response wasn't untrue and they informed you the facts, all devices are partitioned to accommodate different items for the os and the original OS being installed does use a good amount of the available storage but this is normal....
The only response that I can voice on this that the number of space partitioned for Bloatware that should be removable and give the customer the option to reclaim this on devices with limited storage.
Hopefully change is near...

MTP looks to be the best plan, but people are stuck on UMS. The external is nice, but most of the bugs reported from sounds resetting to missing apps and icons come from UMS and Apps2SD. MTP fixes those issues as well as no longer needing partitioning to allow more user storage, but loses the external sd card slot.

All this is probably true about the +- 4GB is used for OS or pre-loaded Apps and +- 4GB of hidden or future use, with a total unavailable storage space of +- 8GB. Makes me wonder about phones that claim 8GB total???? Does that leave NO Internal space available. This issue would not even be if they have been straight from the beginning in their advertising or at least list it correctly in the settings storage section on the phone. I see the fine print as a lot of BS. Who would suspect the "actual storage may be be less" would be half the 16GB......who, I say no one! I would like to see the setting/storage to read as it actually is. Anyway, that's my 2KB worth.
