<Comment deleted per the > I think you ought to quantify this better so noobs don't arbitrarily do it. If your phone is stable the ICS update is not going to hurt a thing.

Not necessarily.  Updates have broken phones that have been working perfectly fine.  A factory reset is generally recommended prior to major OS updates, but it's certainly not required.

Where have you seen it generally reccomended? <Comment deleted per the > both phones are heavily loaded and neither had any issues whatsoever.

For the record, I have *NEVER* done a FR prior to receiving any OS upgrades. Froyo nor GB ... These upgrades are designed to be installed in-place ... the average user won't have the knowledge to deal with the complexities pre & post of a FR.  For that reason alone, MOTO designs these to be installed on top of your current system. That being said, if you *DO* experience significant issues after the install, you have this ability in your tool chest. As far as I know, and read, the official ICS being tested has not required a FR due to any major issues.  And when I say "Official", I'm not referring to ROMS, Pulls from unauthorized sources, etc...  So patience ... any day now.

The vast majority of people won't have issues with the OTA.  But I challenge you to go find an update that hasn't caused issues for people.  Just because it's "official" doesn't prevent data from being corrupted or the update causing other issues, some of which you may not even notice til later down the road. What works on one phone doesn't guarantee that it will work on others and that goes for official and unofficial roms. A Factory Reset takes care of most of those little bugs that can happen with an update and gives you a clean base but most don't like that idea due to losing app data, etc.  By all means, try just installing the OTA first but don't come complaining about issues if you haven't done one.

My only point about "official" is that you know what you're getting ... rather than 'leaks', ROMS, zip files, FLASHING, etc.  And I agree, the vast majority WON'T have any issues ..  but for anyone that does, the FR is there to hopefully fix it. But the pain and days required of setting the phone up again following a FR just doesn't warrant doing it in advance, all just in case you THINK you need to..  IMHO ....

YMMV

That's one of the main flaws that I see with android.  Some sort of backup utility (and not cloud backup with the days of unlimited data dwindling) needs to be implemented for quick restores for "stock" users.

+1 fully agree ...   I think I've heard of 3rd party Apps out there that do that, but not sure .. and not sure if they're FREE. But that would certainly be a great feature ... Mabe in Jelly Bean ??

Hopefully Non of them will have to endure doing it I guess we'll See..

But your post is making it sound like people should do a FR after they get it. I have had a few years of smartphones, and been through Eclair to Froyo, Froyo to GB updates, along with numerous small patch fixes, and I have yet to do a FR.

It should be noted that this is sometimes the last resort.

'MyBackup' in the market / Play Store is great for this very thing. You can choose what/where to backup. I've been using it since 09 on the OG Droid. Never failed me. Be aware though, it will, if you ask, do system settings and home screen layouts and I would not restore those over top of I.C.S. <--major ugliness would ensue.

yeah MyBackup Pro has been the best $4.99 I've ever spent.  It's still severely limited for stock users though. Believe you can backup/restore apps but won't be able to restore market link (i.e.you won't receive updates) and can't restore app specific data/settings.  Does it still allow you to backup/restore sms/mms, call logs, etc without the "extra" privileges?  That app really should be a standard.android feature.

I 'think' so - I've got Pro too. I think that's the most I've ever paid for a smartphone app and I've no regrets whatsoever.

I'm inclined to agree with you smash. When the soakers get done and this thing rolls out to the public, I believe that if there are any prereq's to the OTA, there will be a note of some kind about it.

Duewester: Man I don't think they soaked this one. I just got the OTA on my Razr(<Comment deleted>)

There are A LOT of folks getting the OTA. If they soaked it, it barely got wet lol. <Comment deleted per the TOS>

I know on my original Droid Incredible, I went from Eclair to Froyo within a couple of weeks of getting that phone.  I had problems with my email at that point and wound up using a separate app.  I tried doing a FR and it did not correct the problem.  When The DInc went to GB, I had no problems at all and enjoyed some of the advancements.
